RE: [DMCForum] Re: Gasoline Prices and the election

Dave,

The MTBE levels in the gasoline had an adverse effect on "Old" elastomers in
dynamic applications, such as diaphragms.

Elastomers in a static sealing situation, would swell, but not typically
leak.

Where we really had problems was when we had to deal with 100% MTBE, that is
when we needed to use the very expensive KALREZ elastomers.

You may thank the Lawyers (Politicians) for the inconvenience.

Scott

Not to mention what MTBE did to older cars (such as our Ds).  It eats rubber
like a wet cracker.  I heard hundreds of stories how it ate fuel pump
diaphragms in older cars, including a couple of my own older cars.  I
believe it may have been responsible for eating the fuel pump boot on my D
as well.

Bob,

The San Francisco refinery produces approximately 50 MBPD of finished
gasoline.

Using MTBE was mandated by law.  Now, we have discovered that the MTBE is
contaminating our underground aquifers.

All of this money that had to be spent so the refineries could produce or
use the MTBE oxygenates has been wasted.

How do you clean up the aquifers?

A great example of what happens when Lawyers dictate what technologies we
must use.

Scott
