[DMCForum] FoMoCo (Jon Heese)

Had to follow this thread back to it's beginning...

I'm actually the world's SECOND largest FoMoCo advocate. AMC occupies
Number 1 slot.

But let's be honest: GM spent the better part of a century kicking
Ford very hard. Some truly exceptional vehicles found their way out of
Dearborn, but the company was perennially playing catch up. GM could
re-tool much more quickly. Their designs were usually more
progressive. Even General Motors steel and trim were slightly higher
quality. Not until the 1980's did Ford finally surpass their biggest
competitor (which coincidentally is the same time I lose interest in
the industry -- don't even try to talk to me about Tauruses).

I'm talking about the consumer automobile divisions of course. Ford
trucks have always out performed Chevy/GMC.

And on the race circuits...

While we're on the subject of automotive history: has anyone noticed
that individual personalities have now disappeared from the industry?
Think of Lincoln and you think of Edsel. Think of Pontiac and you
think of JZD. Think of Rambler (AMC) and you think of George Romney.
(I refuse to concede the Mustang to Lee Iacoca because there's very
good evidence he hated the car initially, then usurped the idea as his
own when he realized its marketing potential). Outside our borders,
Yoshiro(?) Honda and Ferdinand Porsche (VW) are inextricably linked to
their companies. When you think of a 2004 Kia, who comes to mind?
