Yes and no.  I am referring to only to the low pressure
switch better known as the, "low pressure cycling switch".
It should trip at around 30 psi.  At pressures above 30 psi,
it closes turning the compressor on.  At pressures under 30
psi, it opens turning the compressor off.

The high pressure safety switch works similar but in
reverse.  If the pressure gets too high then it opens & cuts
the compressor off to avoid having something explode.  (This
is connected in series with the low pressure cycling
switch.)

You should be able to remove the low pressure cycling switch
without loosing a significant amount of refrigerant.  Think
of it as a tire valve stem cap that has a pin in it.  When
it is screwed in place, it pushes the schrader valve open.
When you unscrew it, some refrigerant will leak out until
you have it all the way off.  But it is possible for the
schrader valve to have some debris on the seat which could
allow it to leak as long as you have it apart.  If it is a
fast leak then be ready to screw something back on there
pretty quick.
