Well, something I worked out, as a result of reading he suggestion of
inserting a spring, is as follows:
I couldn't find an appropriately sized spring, so used a 2' length of
M10 stud, cut a slit in both ends and using those to lock it in place,
tightly wound copper coated mig wire down its length. Then inserted it
through the pickup hose with the aid of silicone spray (washing up
liquid is a good substitute - just remember to rinse and dry
afterwards). Snipping the locked ends of the wire off makes it go
"sproinggggg" and wrap itself tightly around the inside of the hose. It
remains perfectly flexible but becomes very difficult to squash - almost
impossible between thumb and forefinger.
