Yeah, but if taxes were fair, they wouldn't have to use tax shelters
and loopholes.

I agree. Actually, I think we should take it one step farther: Flat
tax of x% on any income over, say, $15,000. Quite frankly, I don't
have a problem giving really poor people a free ride. Anyone just
barely scraping by shouldn't have to pay taxes.

This would save our country billions of dollars in administration and
paperwork alone. It would also put a lot of people out of business
(which, frankly, I can pass off as the price of progress).
