properly?

I think that the 2 to 4" guideline was first mentioned in a
DML archive.  But by my own experiences, any tension strong
enough to lift the door from resting on the latches is too
much.  If you disagree then your struts are weak.  I
adjusted a torsion bar that was previously adjusted so tight
that it lifted the door about 1/3rd open.  The tension was
so excessive that it twisted the splines for the nut plate.
It also fractured the end allowing the hex key to spread the
crack making the end too fat to fit the nut plate.  What a
mess!  I've dealt with the problem on two other DeLoreans.

door hinge on the
driver's side, should it fit perfectly?

I have seen a few that look like they are going to slip in
place.  I have heard of this happening, and it was fixed by
adding shims.  Also I have seen the problem where someone
doesn't fully seat the torsion bar into the hinge.  This
reduces the spline surface that the nut plate grabs and
actually twists the splines.  Replacement torsion bars are
not cheap to come by.  Be careful how you mess with them.
