[DMCForum] Re: jack points...

I recently went to a class on how to load military cargo planes. One
thing I learned about was "load spreading".

I have yet to see a jack or jack stand that matches up well with the
little metal jacking points on the car. If you use a jack that
doesn't match up well with that stupid circle you may be exerting too
much pressure on one small point which could punch a hole in the
fiberglass or worse have the car collapse on top of you.

I guess my point here is, you all are right to use wood to spread the
load across a larger portion of the fiberglass. I would still do the
same thing if jacking up by the rear crossmember to avoid damaging
the metal or chipping the epoxy which of course leads to rust.

Most folks I've seen prefer to jack up the car in the center vs the
jack points. Especially because of the horror stories about cracking
the windshield because of the "twist" you put on the car when jacking
from a front corner.

I say that's a good way to do it if you're working on the sides of
the car but I'd never get underneath it that way. Too much car
supported by only one point. I don't even like stands. I prefer ramps
and chocks if I'm going underneath.

Just my .02.
