Mine was dead not too long ago. A quick check:

While the engine is running, disconnect the vac hose that leads to the
distributor. While you rev the engine, put your thumb on the little nipple
sticking off of the solenoid. You should feel suction there.

I think solenoid is controlled by the throttle switch, but don't quote me
on
that.
