If I didn't find it right away, I'd ignore the problem, for fear that getting too invasive with the wiring might cause a bigger and better problem. But it all depends on how much it bothers you that the guage doesn't work. Personally, a missing voltmeter wouldn't bother me much. A missing temperature guage or fuel guage probably would.
