Miles, I have been trying to solve the problem of mounting my iPhone for safe use in the D for years. Mounting to the windshield is impractical because of the slope and distance versus your reach.

The best solution I have found so far is the NAJA King phone mount. It has a flexible cord that can wedge nicely between the binnacle and the center console, without cutting leather. Then, run the flexible cord down to the knee panel, and use a nylon loop tie to hold it in place. 

There is a nut behind the knee panel that holds the knee panel in place.  If you get it just right, you can take the nut off, add the nylon loop, and then reattach the nut.
