I don't like the water getting in the engine area either, but my assumption is that the 
screens were put there for needed heat venting. It would have been cheaper to have a solid cover instead of the screens. Cars with engines in the front probably get more air circulation around the engine than DeLoreans with the rear engine. I would not want to run the risk of overheating by eliminating the engine cover screens. Even if heat were not an issue for the engine, the alternator, belts etc. may get hotter without the screens. Heat is an enemy for all things electrical.

My solution to the water issue is to not drive my car in the rain. Needless to say my car is not a daily driver.

By the way, I still appreciate the wide angle mirrors. They are great!
