[DML] Re: R134 Freon @ $6.40 Per Can

Actually it is more likely the schrader valves are leaking than the hoses themselves.

I've got blissfully cold R134 converted A/C on a 1981 DeLorean, 1978 and 1979 Lincolns, and a 1989 school bus that says original R12 hoses are just fine.

Running -134 at higher pressures and hotter temperatures just hastens the process. The original hoses were never intended to last 30 years in any case. Newer "barrier type" hoses have an internal core that is more leakproof than the older type hoses. I agree that in replacing the hoses there is always the chance you can do collateral damage but when the hose does leak you have no choice. And the hoses WILL leak. I consider it PM just as you would change cooling system hoses and belts BEFORE they go bad. Anyone contemplating getting their "dead" A/C going should replace the hoses because that is probably why there is no refrigerant in the system!
