Batteries ARE a more efficient way of storing mains electricity because the production of hydrogen by electrolysis, then compressing it is less efficient. 

By mass, LH2 is a better fuel than gasoline but by volume it's considerably worse!

Hydrogen is the fuel of the future, but there're too many problems to be overcome to make it economically worthwhile over petroleum fuels at the moment

Ignoring the solar issue (Even buying electricity from the grid is cheaper than gasoline), if we are talking about transportation using electricity the real comparison would be the "sorting" the electricity in a battery versus hydrogen.

Hydrogen seems like it is cheaper, lighter, and has less impact on the environment.
