Slight clarification of Martin's post: White/Gray originates at the Ignition ECU (it's a ground that is switched on & off by the ECU), then separates at a soldered junction inside the relay compartment (likely intact) to various devices: coil, RPM relay, idlespeed ECU, and dash tach. Coil is at the end of one of those lines.

Everything depends upon this sentence in your original post: "... He suspected a bad RPM relay as it would work when bypassed with toggle switches...." Do you mean the engine worked (ran) when the RPM relay was bypassed? If so, the distributor pickup and ignition ECU must be OK, otherwise the engine would not run.

Your mechanic should be able to see an ice pick light flash on & off as the engine rotates at the White/Gray wire in RPM relay harness connector, just like the negative side of the coil.

That wire should of course ring out to the coil as well.

If your mechanic can not ring out White/Gray between the RPM relay and the coil, and if the engine in fact runs with the RPM relay bypassed, the break has to be between the soldered junction in the relay compartment and the RPM relay harness connector (about 1 foot apart from each other). Everything between the soldered junction and coil/ignition ECU would have to be intact for the engine to run.
