It is unlikely to be the battery because that wouldn't cause the engine to quit, and he says his lights still work. The cutting out AND the inability to crank sounds like the power supply to the ignition barrel is dropping out.

It could be anything between the battery and the motor, including all of the things mentioned. I would start by removing the battery and cleaning the connections. I would also fully charge and load-test it. If it is over 5 years old just replace it. Next would be a through visual examination of the wiring harness especially in the area around the starter and the alternator.
