RE: [DML] Re: Tune-up

Robert etc,

I have NEVER had the leaking insulator problem with either SILVER (surprised
that your mechanic?s had problems with those) OR COPPER plugs but it is very
common with the standard platinum plugs. The amazing thing is I tried them
when they first came out in the early eighties after 25+ years they still
haven?t fixed the problem from what I?ve heard. I reluctantly tried a set a
customer supplied a few years back and guess what?.they leaked and the
engine missed too. Leave it to the German engineers at Bosch to be oblivious
about acknowledging problems! I can only get away with saying that because
I?m ¾?s German :-) Seriously though I haven?t tried the plus 4?s so I can?t
comment on them but I?ve had a set laying around for a few years which
should eventually wind up in my rolling test-bed??the green car?. Maybe now
sooner than later as I?m curious to know if they work. I can?t honestly
believe a 130HP engine requires four electrodes to ignite a fuel charge but
overkill is better than under!

Water in the sparkplug wells is of course a bad thing. If nothing else,
always keep on of those large drinking straws from McDonald's with you. That
way you can easily blow the water out of the wells quickly.

I believe that Rob Grady once said that when it comes to the BOSCH plugs, to
stick with copper, because he had problems with the silver and platinum ones
having poor seals between the porcelain and the body. I've ran Platinum
plugs in my car, and damned if I didn't have the very problem he warned
about. The engine began to loose a bit of power, and you could see
discoloration on 5 of six plugs, and soot on one of them. And this is a
stock engine. My old DeLorean mechanic confirmed the same thing, and said
that for all cars that came into their shop they would avoid BOSCH Platinum
and Silver plugs like the plague and would just stick with Copper.

Based upon my experience for a reliable engine I would choose these
replacements:

Either BOSCH Copper, or NGK Plugs.
Either OEM or BOSCH Sparkplug wires.
Stock Coil.
Stock Resistor.

Keep in mind to stick with quality Ignition Wires. I once installed a set of
"Blue Thunder" performance wires by Borg Warner, and had nothing but
problems with them. Aside from not sealing properly ontop and allowing water
to drain into the sparkplug wells, they were leaking voltage and making my
engine problems worse.

I've experimented before with the MSD Blaster 2 coil & 8ohm Resistor, and
gaped the plugs to .32. Performance felt like it had improved, and a couple
of other DeLorean owners who had ridden with me said that acceleration
seemed quicker to them as well when they had ridden with me. Of course
that's all anecdotal, but what wasn't was emissions significantly increased
and MPG dropped by about 3-4mpg. Of course there were other problems with
the engine before the car was shoved into storage so it's rather hard to do
a full comparison.

John's 25,000 volt Bosch coil [as an upgrade?] since I doubt the stock one
has that much punch to it. I have +4 plugs that are a little old but few
miles and are still in good shape; also Johns 8mm wires and upgraded
resistor. I once used the blaster coil with my setup but I remember having
problems with it - I believe it was melted distributor rotor but can't
remember correctly. Nonetheless, with what I have as far as plugs, wires and
resister; which coil should I be going after? My engine runs like garbage
when it rains, and when it is dry it sputters at stops from time to time and
just doesn't feel "right". Thanks guys -----Dani B. in FL!
