[DML] Re: Transmission Problem - any ideas

Two things come into my mind:
1. bad clutch plate due to rear crank seal leak
2. 5th gear nut problem (also leaks oil)

1. The oil puddle should be at the point where the gearbox is attached to the engine. A greasy clutch plate slips and also produces the burnt smell.
2. The oil puddle should be near the end of the gearbox. You probably have heard a grinding sound.

Check out both.

Also, a large pool of transmission fluid had dumped out of the gearbox onto the floor (by large I mean the whole area under the rear of the car was a swimming pool).
