[DML] Re: Cleaning gas tank

To properly clean the tank it can be done with it in the car if you are flexible. Remove the pump, boot, pick-up, hoses, and wires. Also remove the sender unit. Suck out as much fluid as you can and mop up the rest with rags or paper towels. Dispose of properly and do it all safely with personal protection, no smoking, etc. For any residue as mentioned, acetone will dissolve it, it is just dangerous to use. Replace any deteriorated parts and after you use up a tankful of fuel replace the gas filter. Wipe out all the shiny specks of metal, water and any other junk that you find in the tank.

Be sure to get elbow-length chemical gloves (I got some at Fleet Farm) and I recommend wearing an organic chemical-shielding respirator. The vapors can be very overpowering. I work in the dry cleaning industry and these are easy to come by for me, but I think Grainger sells them too. With the respirator on, you will be able to get your face down in there and clean it out without taking breaks or losing brain cells. It uses filtration cartridges by 3M.
