[DML] Re: Door Alignment

Aligning the doors on a Delorean is one of the hardest things to do,
especially if you have no experience at it. Hard to do with the
torsion bar in, you really do have to align it without the bar because
of the extreme stress it puts on the parts and it is in the way to get
to the hardware that holds the hinges on. The others are correct in
that after getting the door aligned you will tweak it a little when
you tighten up the torsion bar. You must compensate for that when
installing the door. The door is primeraly adjusted to the fiberglass
underbody and then you have to adjust the S/S panels around it. Pay
particular attention to the area between the door and the windscreen
along the "A" pillar and the top, front of the windscreen. It does
make it easier to try doing this without the latch pins, at least in
the beginning. Aligning the door and the panels is all about
compromise and "splitting" differences. Difficult to achieve
perfection. Try to make it look like the other side. Use new inner and
outer door seals. Use a helper if you can, the door is heavy. If you
use a prop to hold the door open DO NOT do it from the floor. Go from
the door sill to the bottom of the open door. If you do it from the
floor and the car moves the door will fall. Make up some extra shims
for the hinges and just keep trying until you are satisfied with the
fit. Refer to the appropriate Service Bulletin regarding water leaks
and how to seal the body to prevent them. Be very careful to not
scratch the surface of the torsion bar. Be careful of all of the sharp
edges inside the door.
