[DML] Re: Tires

Another factor that contributed to the Ford problem is that they went
with a tire that was too close to the limit of it's weight capacity.
On top of that Firestone, in an attempt to make the cheapest product
for the price, skimped on the manufacture of the tire. With everyone
cheating it's no surprise they ended up with a tire that was not safe.
The moral here, as Mark points out, is to regularly check the pressure
in your Deloreans tires. Those 4 balloons are all there is keeping your car off
of the ground! Low tire pressure causes a lot more than a soft ride.
In cornering the tire will "tuck under" ie, the sidewards forces tend
to want to remove the bead from the rim. When that happens the tire
loses pressure suddenly and that is what caused the roll-overs. Air
pressure is what keeps the bead sealed to the rim against the
sidewards forces. Experiment with tire pressures at your own risk.
Higher is always better and safer than lower. For those that don't
want to experiment use the recomended tire sizes and pressures on the
label on the glove box. NEVER MIX SIZES ON THE SAME AXLE and try to
always use the same type of tire all around. If you ever have to drive
on the spare you MUST be a LOT more cautious and obey the speed
restriction.

customers complained about the harsh ride of the truck (DUH, its a
Truck!) Ford issued a TSB telling the dealers to lower the tire
pressure for a softer ride. It is the low tire pressure that caused
the tires to fail.
