Your measurement should be parallel to the ground.  You could take a yardstick (not sure if that would be long enough, maybe a long 2x4 instead) and stand it straight up against the door.  Open the door and slide the stick towards you as the door opens.  Hold it where it is farthest away from the car but don't let it come back towards the car, since the door needs less room as it goes up, past a certain point.  Then mark that outermost spot on the ground (where your yardstick is standing).  Next, stand your yardstick straight up against the car, touching the black weatherstripping. Mark that point.  Use your yardstick to measure the distance between the two points, and that is your answer.  Let us know what you find!
