[DML] Re: selling a D overseas

I have sold several cars that were exported overseas. As the seller
you should not have to do anything special. As far as you are
concerned it is a sale taking place in America and any transport of
the car after the sale is not your concern. You should include in your
Bill of Sale the language "as is, where is". Do NOT allow the car to
leave your possesion (and the title too) without CASH! DO NOT accept a
letter of credit, a check of any kind unless it is a bank check drawn
on an American bank which you can verify BEFORE you give over the car.
Do not trust a wire transfer either. Cash is the safest way if at all
possible. Also include in the Bill of Sale the mileage, the date, the
name of the buyer and seller, and that it is a USED CAR with no
warranties expressed or implied and the vin #. All you will do is
indemnify the buyer as to clean title. The buyer (or his agent) will
have to handle any paperwork necessary for export. All you give the
buyer is the Title and a Bill of Sale with the car. Don't forget to
remove any paperwork, license plates, personal articles, etc. Don't
cancel the insurance until you have received the cash. Tell the buyer
the car can't remain in your posession very long after the sale or you
will wind up storing it for him for a long time for free. Be VERY
cautious of out-of-country buyers.
