Both have by-passes and anti-back-flow.

The D oil pump has a pressure regulator (internal bypass) see
p.C:10:01 of the shop manual.

An internal by-pass in an oil filter is, in my opinion, preferable.
The oil filter by-pass works if the pressure on the inside of the
filter drops below the outside or supply side. That would mean the
filter is restricted or the engine parts are too loose to hold
pressure. Most internal by-passes open at a differential of about
15lbs. if I remember my reading correctly (or less). Any way, I
prefer unfiltered oil verses no oil if the pressure differential
were to ever happen - which should be rare. I use full synthetic 5-
40 oil and change it once a year and it stays clean (2,500 - 5,000
miles a year).

BTW if you look in the shop manual on page C:11:01 Fig. 112, you
will see that the oil filter shown in the diagram has an internal by-
pass.
