Re: [DML] Intercooler

Hi Nick

It's definitely best to include an intercooler of any sort, although
less important on a supercharged engine. The reason you never get a
strait answer is because it's true to say "the bigger the better" (until
you get so big as to increase lag, but you'll hit a size limit before
then usually)

However, you don't have a ready supply of air for an air-to-air
intercooler, unless you sling it under the engine. The Alpine GTA V6
Turbo has a decent intercooler but a pathetic airflow over it, and many
of the GTA guys are now jacketing theirs and pumping the water to the
front of the car and installing a radiator. The measured difference in
charge temperature is massive, and the biggest single advantage of a
chargecooler is the thermal mass. Even if the charge temperature rises
on an accelleration run, it cools back down again within seconds, unlike
an intercooler (paraphrasing one of the GTA guys measurements). Some of
the best off-the-shelf chargeoolers are now coming out of Australia from
PWR performance - they call them "barrel-coolers". I suggest you look
them up :-) http://www.pwr.com.au/

FWIW the twin turbo on #2727 has two intercoolers almost exactly the
same size as yours and they are where the exhaust back box would be, if
it had one.
