You're right, that sounds exactly the same. Don at DeLorean Motor
Center showed me the two torque converters. He found that the wrong
one looked almost identical to the right one, but the splines were
just a little different (I can't quite remember how) and it required
a fair amount of force to get it to fit onto the transmission.

So I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing had happened here. This
wrong torque converter was installed before I owned the car, so it's
possible that the whole transmission was replaced and that it came
with the wrong converter.

Andy: incidentally, my very unscientific 0-60 test with the wrong
torque converter on a mostly straight/flat road was about 18 seconds,
as opposed to the typical 8-12 seconds. I also noticed that once I
got over 15 MPH it started to get some power. It might be worth
trying a 0-60 test and see how it compares to the quoted performance
figures; if you haven't driven a DeLorean before, this might help you
gauge if the car is performing as intended or if it just seems slow
compared to your expectations.
