I use a long drill bit to keep the drill chuck away from the torsion bar and
to get the correct angle. I also cover the torsion bar with a split piece of
clear tubing. I use a small brass tube around the drill bit as a depth stop
- with the added benefit that the drill bit spins inside the tube and not
against the torsion bar/covering.

Overkill?
