Well, this could be a number of things, however a friend of mine had a
similar problem and it turned out that his injectors were so bad that when
you hit the gas it just sputtered along. The car idled like a champ.

But before I discovered this I checked the entire car over for vaccuum
leaks, which can also cause this sort of condition if there is a massive
one.
