If you want the end-all light bulb replacement, use white LEDs. Start with
an old light bulb base, break the glass stuff off, solder the white LED in
place and use some epoxy to make it solid. Then there won't be any more
heat related dash light problems. I would like to work on this project, but
have way too much else to do. I figure that it is just a matter of time
before the auto shops have solid state bulbs on the shelf next to all the
old fashioned incandescent ones.
