It does sound like you are having shifting problems and they are 
probably shift computer related. To verify I would recomend building a 
test light set-up to watch the computer engage the solenoids to shift 
the car. Since you say you are not very "electrical" you are probably 
safe in just replacing the shift computer. You can drive the car just 
be careful not to overspeed engine or trans and stop if it starts 
shifting up and down like a bucking bronco. If it is stuck in second 
gear don't run the engine over 2500 rpm's. As of now there is no 
"offical" place to send your old computer for repair but don't throw 
it away!
