Once the clutch fluid level drops below the clutch master cylinder (reservoir bottle empty) you must bleed the system at the slave cylinder in order to regain hydraulic pressure.

Somehow I managed to let my cluch fluid container get bone dry, and
didn't notice it until I got stuck in first gear one day.
