Painted panels

On my recent trip to the DeLorean Car Show in Cleveland, I made a stop at the warehouse in Ohio and made an interesting discovery.

I found two right hand fenders, one with the word "Ditzler" written in magic marker on the back, and the other with the words "Sherwin Williams". Note that these are the two companies that submitted instructions on the proper way to prepare and paint stainless steel panels. The serivce bulletin also states that sample panels were submitted. I feel confident that these are those panels.

Each panel "divided" into four sections, with one section being bare stainless, two other sections bearing some sort of primer, and the final section being painted black. Chipped paint in the black areas show primer underneath.

There was some speculation that Ditzler and/or Sherwin Williams had painted entire cars for their tests. While the general consensus was that was unlikely, this should push that possibility even further into the realm of unlikelihood.

Incidentally, the panel that is painted with the tinted clearcoat has no markings on the back of it that might identify its source. :(
