Hello,
I think that the VINs came in sequence at least for the 1981 models VIN 
560-7199. This is evidenced by a DMC Service Bulletin. The 1982 models start 
on VIN 10000. Now, I strongly believe that there is none skip in the 10000 
series VIN. The series continues with 11000 series up to around VIN 
11700/11800.

Then there is a gap. There are strong indications that VIN 15000 and 16000 
series came in sequence. The only series that I think has skips in it are 
the 17000 series which were a special-built series for Canada with 140MPH 
speedos, and I believe some metric clusters too! Celsius instead of 
Fahrenheit, Kilometres instead of Miles, etc.
