Forget about it ! The battery is not the cause of your clunking sound. BTW:
the battery will stay in place by gravity unless you flip the car upside
down.
The clunking noise can emanate from two different areas. First check the
trailing arm bolts and bushing fasteners. If they are tight try tightening
your rear body to chassis bolts: Parts Manual 8 /1 / 0 fig. # 4.

This reminds me...I had a rear-end "clunk" that I was troubleshooting
(supsension, I think) and went to secure the battery to make sure that
wasn't the problem. However, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how
to accomplish that with the given straps and latch mechanism. Can anyone
possibly explain how to do it over email (i.e., without the benefit of
gestures, illustrations, or other visual aids). It frankly has me baffled.
