You may need to check your ignition switch. I've seen this with GM cars in the past. Some switches have a different source of power to the ignition system while in start vs. run mode of the ignition switch.  Therefore, if this is the problem and the start source of power is not working properly, your car will never start while the key is in the start position. However, as soon as you release the key, the switch goes to the run position, thereby providing power to the ignition system and allowing the engine to run. It will start because the engine still cranks for a second from when you held the key in the start position. I don't know if Delorean ignition switch is the same, but it sounds like it!!
