Jamie,

The first thing is don't give them the car.  The second item is there 
may be some fine print in your policy about how much you can buy the car 
for.  On some policies, older cars can be kept for $500 off the 
settlement.  

You can negotiate and get to keep the car.  The first rule though is 
DON'T let them take the car.  Just tell them you want to keep it. and 
negotiate from there.  Most insurance companies have a set value for 
scarp cars.   If they try to pull a fast one,  go up the ladder to get 
what you want.

I learn this lesson the hard way when I lost my original 69 Camaro.
