 Oh yeah, that's exactly what I did INSTEAD of the RS screw/nut job, and it works very well.  I did use a larger soldering gun (rather than a pencil) to make sure the socket and the board got hot enough to make the solder flow well.  I also added some solder to the center of the bulb socket to make a better connection to the bulb itself.
