I've been told worn lower ball-joints may do this. Try turning the
wheels completely from side to side while sitting still. Also, jack
the front up and try to wiggle the wheel from top to bottom, then
from side to side.

This is not a definitive test though, so be warned.

Ken, though I think you meant that to be funny, I
think some people might have found it offensive. My
dad's a big guy, at 6'6" and 280. Not as muscular as
he used to be, but at least now he can have a shirt
like me for when we go to shows!

Also, my wife bought a t-shirt to sleep in! She's
about 120 lbs, but now I can at least sleep with "my"
DeLorean!

Make sure all the lug nuts are tight. Raise the car and inspect the
front sway bar bushings both on the frame and at the lower control
arms. You could also have a bad or loose ball joint, loose shock
absorber or worn rubber bushing. The steering rack could also be
loose. You really have to go underneath and look for something that is
loose, worn, or just not right. Have someone shake the wheels back and
forth while you watch for play or excess movement. I would also check
the trailing arm bolts.

This is no biggie, just annoying---
For some reason, I just noticed that when the car is running and I use the
overhead light in the cabin, the driver door ajar light comes on until I turn
the overhead light off.   I do not have the courtesy fuse in anyway, so the door
lights do not work, nor does the overhead light in the cabin.   So why when I
push it should the door ajar light come on in the instrument cluster?   I
plan on checking around the fuse box for crossed wires, but does anyone else have
this problem?   Any ideas?

Thanks,
Patrick

You forgot Subaru on your list.  Its the car I use for daily use.
With AWD and ABS its great for those snowy winters here in Chicago.

I also use a Chevy truck for trips to Home Depot.  I included it on
your poll.

Subject: DeLorean Parts Northwest is born

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT – DeLorean Parts Northwest has purchased the
entire inventory of Specialty Automotive!  A new company, with many
new products planned, and also with the same innovative custom parts
and accessories that have been the hallmark of Specialty Automotive.
As many of you know, Darryl Tinnerstet has been serving the
DeLorean community worldwide by providing original and upgraded
custom parts and accessories for the DeLorean automobile for about
18 years, along with a healthy dose of knowledge about the workings
of these wonderful little cars.  He has always been willing to share
his knowledge with others who want to maintain and improve their
cars.  A short time ago, Darryl made the formal announcement that he
was retiring from the DeLorean parts business so that he could focus
on other endeavors.  The purpose of this post is to announce that I
have made arrangements to acquire Darryl's complete inventory in
order to form the basis for a new company … DeLorean Parts Northwest
(DPNW).  The transition is ongoing, and we plan to have it completed
by the end of December.  During this transitional period, Darryl and
I, along with my wife and business partner Misty, will act as a team
to meet the needs of DeLorean owners without undue disruption of
service.  DeLorean Parts Northwest will assume the same website URL
(www.DeLorean-parts.com) that Specialty Automotive has used for many
years, although the exact date for the relaunch of the website under
the new banner has not been determined.  Look for many changes and
enhancements to the website in the very near future.  Until the vast
inventory of Specialty Automotive is physically moved to its new
location, which will be completed in the next two weeks, Darryl will
continue to fulfill product orders as he always has.  I will post
another message with new ordering information upon completion of the
move.  I would like to publicly "tip my hat" to Darryl for the
marvelous service that he has provided to all of us through the
years.  Misty and I will do our very best to carry on the tradition
of service and quality that Darryl has established through Specialty
Automotive, while aggressively seeking to meet the demands for
upgraded custom parts and accessories.  We intend to seek higher
levels of performance, handling, and quality for the DeLorean
automobile, while maintaining a competitive pricing structure.
Thank you for your support and patience during this exciting time of
change.

The Florida Keys are VERY humid. My guess is you need a tune-up, The
spark plugs are probably worn and the ignition wires are probably
breaking down causing the car to be hard to start. You don't have to
be a mechanic to change these parts but you do have to have patience
and be very careful you put everything back as you found it. You don't
even need a lot of tools. Just a socket set with a spark plug socket,
some metric allen wrenches to remove the idle motor, and a gapping
gauge for the spark plugs. When you buy the parts from one of the
venders they can talk you through it. You might also want to order an
extra oil filter, air filter, a drain plug adapter and a Workshop
manual. If the battery is over 5 years old you may also need to
replace it too.

Subject: Auto Shifter Medalion - I HAVE A REPLACEMENT!

As many of you know, I recently bought an 81 automatic.
I was picking at that little medallion on the center of the shifter
because it was melted, deformed and all the paint was rubbed off it.
After slightly messing with it it popped right off.
It looks like it was glued with some sort of epoxy, or super glue
and the plastic had dried up, and the emblem has distorted into
a potato chip.
I had bent it back into shape, and had considered hand painting the
little DMC in the center with silver paint.....can't be done.
Looks like crap.

Well, with my quest for perfection I have not been able to find an
original replacement anywhere, and no one can tell me about a decent
reproduction.
So I went to a friend of mine that makes custom signs, he owns a $16K
thermal printer that can actually print CHROME onto a extremely strong
adhesive vinyl material, and then laminate it with a thick 3-M
material. Long story short, we made some of the little medallions.
They are BETTER than the originals, the "DMC" is chrome, or reflective
silver, and there is a matching ring around the outside with a black
background. This is a thick peel-and-stick type sticker that fits
exactly in the center of the shifter, or any where else you would
like! The laminate protects it from all the touching and rubbing
you can dish out. This material is used mostly on outside use,
and he makes custom graphics for moto-cross bikes, so they are tough
and water proof. Bottom line is that it looks good, it doesn't look
cheap, it looks factory.

In order to get the ONE that I needed made I had to cover the
cost of the minimum size of 12" x 12".
This gave me about 80 of them.

If anyone needs one of these for their car I will sell you one
for only $5.00 with shipping included.

I accept Paypal to: videobob(AT)hotmail.com

If anyone wants to buy a quantity of them I will cut you a deal.
Please contact me about them.

Thanks,
- Videobob

I would guess that the circuit is grounding out through the door ajar light
since you have the fuse out. Clean all your grounds good and it will
probably stop. Right now the door ajar light must be the path of least
resistance to ground.

Check the three diodes next to the gas pedal for continuity. You should get
a reading on a ohm meter only in one direction. Also check that they have a
tight fitting connection. The spade lugs will loosen with age.

FYI for those who do not get the newsletter or are not in the club yet . . .
The DeLorean Club of Ohio's annual meeting is Saturday Jan 17th at Maumee Bay
State Park. Address is below for those who map quest.

Don't let the name fool you. Yes the majority of us are in Ohio but we are open
to anyone who wants to participate, with or without a car. And since it is
soooooooooo close to Michigan this year (just East of the Greater Toledo
Metroplex) it is even more accommodating for those with the superior college
football team to attend ;-) And I know there are more than James & Eric in MI.

This is the meeting where we decide what group events are to come for the rest of
the year, elect officers etc. And since it will be "The Year of the Pigeon" I'm
sure there will be much to plan and Ken will have plenty to add.

The number of actual DeLoreans in attendance will depend on snow & salt.
Please RSVP to myself or Mike Substelny so we can notify you of any cancelations
due to possible bad weather.

Saturday January 17, 2004

Subject: Re: Door Open Indicator w/ Lever Light -- Bad Diode

Welcome to wonderful world of DeLorean switched grounds...

Door open indicator live all the time (fuse #5, which is why pulling
#12 doesn't affect). Is a diode to prevent it from grounding itself
backwards through flipped lever light. Yours has probably gone bad.

Diodes located in driver footwell, part way down front wye (look like
M80's). Are three of them. You want one with 2 purple/white inputs and
1 purple/white output. Can simply unplug to test if allowing indicator
to ground.

If fuse #12 is pulled why are you flipping lever light? Shouldn't work
at all. If it does, guarantee diode bad (is getting juice from same
line as indicator) -- assuming wiring still stock.

Thanks,
I will check the grounds out.? The door ajar light also comes on when I open
the glove box lid, and still happens even when the fuse is in.? When hooking
up my battery this morning I also noticed that the seatbelt buzzer (or some
buzzer) went on and wouldn't go off (the keys were not even in the ignition).? I
got it to stop buzzing by jiggling the wires at the switch the door
depresses.? Unhooking the wires from that had no effect on the door ajar light, it still
comes on when I use the overhead light or the glovebox light.?

Any other ideas?
