Just to add another data point, my VIN 1619 (June 1981) had both the windshield and rear retractable antennas.. although I'm pretty sure the retractable was added later as part of the "dealer upgrades."

And a message to VideoBob - just buy the best car cover you can for your climate.  I've stored my D outside in the harsh New England winters with nothing but a custom car cover from California Car Covers (I think I have the "Noah"), and the car (interior and exterior) has shown zero degradation (or "destruction") over the last four years.  When I do have to park it in the sun on short trips, I do have one of those silver windshield/dash protectors to keep the sun off the dash.  I wouldn't worry about applying any chemicals to the dash - just protect it from the sun as much as possible.

"to fix, you need to remove the binnacle, the knee pads, and the complete steering column by
seperating the U-joints at the intermediate shaft" - Andy, you must have too much time on your hands.  There is no reason in the world to remove the binnacle to replace the bushing; you don't even need to remove the knee pads unless you really want something extra to do.  Just mark the shaft where it meets the upper u-joint, unbolt the u-joint, unplug the wires, and remove the two column support bolts.  Taking the seat out might help you get under the dash, but no need to remove the binnacle.  I've done lots of them that way, the only tricky part is sometimes getting the u-joint off the shaft, or keeping the shaft from collapsing when you re-install it.

Also, some of the replacement bushings fit better than others.  I once had a customer return one of "mine" because it wouldn't fit - turned out it was not one he had gotten from me.  The ones I provide fit.

Does anyone have a contact @ centerforce?  I called
and spoke to someone who said they would get right

get voice mail for him.. and he never calls back.

Funny, I got the exact same response from Valeo as I
did from Centerforce..  "Sure, we can help you with
that!!  We will call you back in a few days", then
NOTHING.

Videobob,
Definitely get a sun shade and a car cover. I got my car cover from
www.griotsgarage.com but upon learing about Dave Straghand being a CarCraft
dealer I'd say buy from him & help support Project Vixen.

Upon rave reviews here on the DML I use Lexol for the leather and Vinylex for the
vinyl. Vinylex also works well on the rubber parts.

To replace the steering column bushing you do not have to remove the binnacle. If
you order one from Houston you will get a great set of directions. Theirs even
leave the steering column in the car! If doing it their way pay special attention
to the suggestion to file down the inner part of the bushing so it fits on
smoothly and easy, otherwise there's no real easy way getting the lower steering
column shaft thru the bushing in the wall without seperating the steering column.
Yep I "learnt" the hard way ;-)

Look under the dash behind the pedal box where the column goes thru the
firewall. there is probably a black rubber bushing split into pieces and you
might see fiberglass dust below the hole where the column rubs.  to fix, you need
to remove the binnacle, the knee pads, and the complete steering column by
seperating the U-joints at the intermediate shaft (near the rack and pinion).  a
new nylon bushing will do the trick to fix that. >>snip<< so i think the bushing
is the problem.

I get at least 5 years from CoverCraft, but by year 7 they're pretty
brittle. Indoor use (protection in garage) is surely much longer.

All my vehicles live outdoors under car covers BTW.

Buy from JC Whitney for $130-$140. Dave Stragand may not be able match
that price, but any profits go to more pertinent cause.

Note CoverCraft are custom fit, not generic. Follow contours of car
precisely.

Owners on coast may not want to go car cover route -- trap salty air
underneath.

I have one of DMC-Houston's "fitted sunshades," and they're as good as everybody says they are. They cut down the heat from the interior dramatically. They're just annoying and time consuming to put on. If you're always in a hurry, just get a cheaper accordian style sunshade which mounts inside the car.

My new car also came with a VERY nice cover from Griot's garage. I just checked my reciepts folder, and it cost $330, and the size for the DeLo is "C". It fits the car like a glove... it may have been custom made for the DMC. I did leave the car outside one week under the cover, and during this time it rained a couple of times. When I retrieved the car, it still looked like it had when I covered it the week before. Seems to be a pretty good sign of quality. I had a cheap cover on my old D which rain would penetrate, and leave these horrible spots on the car. I think if you're going to leave such a nice car outside, you can't skimp on the car cover.

I assisted Andy in his replacement of his steering collumn bushing.
Granted, neither of us had done it before and we didn't really know
what we were doing.

The instructions we had were just as you just said.  But when we
couldn't get the shaft separated from the u-joint we did some
improvising.  I personally dont remember removing the binnacle, but
we did remove the kneepads, the two column support bolts, and then
resorted to classic American engineering, brute force.  We pulled out
on the steering wheel, and out came the column, minus the secondary
connecting shaft for the collapsability. That part was still in the
ujoint.  However, we were able to easily separate the two with one of
us pulling on the remaining piece of the collumn, and the other
prying open the ujoint seam (VERY rusty).

Putting it all back together, we initially tried reinserting the
inner shaft from the collumn, and aligning it based on the grease
marks.  However it kept collapsing when we tried to put it all back
into the u-joint.  So we decided to reverse what we had just done.
We took that inner shaft out again, *carefully* hammered it back into
the ujoint, then simply slid the rest of the collumn back on over
it.  If you ask me, the extra steps of removing the kneepads and
possibly the binnacle for this (which arn't hard at all) was
definately worth it given the difficulty of working with that dang
rusty ujoint.

On second thought, perhaps we didn't remove the binnacle.  i've only removed
it about 10 times myself and repairs i did two or three years ago may be a
little sketchy!!!!!!

I use Hide Food by Crewe (Bentley's in-house accessory line).  by FAR the
best leather cleaner/conditioner around.  about $18 a bottle I believe, and each
bottle lasts about one driving season if you do regular upkeep of the
interior.  works great on the seats and vinyl covers on the dash and doors.  available
at Bentley dealerships and thru some mailorder catalogs like Moss Motors.
Try it, you will not be disappointed.  I use it on my Lexus too, even though it
is made for Connolly leather and other similar euro trim.  the lady at the
dealership told me she uses it on her living room furniture.

Subject: Exhaust Question: DMCH vs. DMUK.

Straight to the point, which exhaust system is better in terms of
performance?

DMCH: http://www.delorean.com/exhaust.asp
or
DMUK: http://www.delorean.co.uk/DMUK/perfomance.html

Looking at DMUK, the HP gains are minimal, as to be expected with a
straight swap, with no engine modifications. However, I've never seen
any dyno info from anyone who's switched out to Houston's system.

I'm also draw to DMUK's design, as it appears to be relatively easy
to swap out catalytic convertors when it comes time for smog
inspection, and for the utilization of shorter pipes. I've read where
some Esprits have had problems in the past with radiant heat from the
Cats melting underbodies in idle traffic, because there was no
cooling airflow. Even though Houston states that their cats are
ceramic coated, is this still something that I should be concerned
about since with Houston's set up, the Cats swing so far outwards to
accomodate the larger headers? On the plus though, DMCH's system
appears to use larger pipes to accomodate a larger volume of exhaust
gasses (incase I swap out to another PRV with larger displacement).

And just as importantly, does anyone have any sound clips of these
systems? I know that the DMUK comes with different tones available,
but I've never heard a single one. And the only recording I've ever
heard of the DMCH setup is someone red-lineing the engine, to the
point where it kills the gain on the recording device. Turning  the
motor over, reving it a bit, letting it idle (fast and regular if
possible), and a final shut down would be great to hear.

WalMart sells car covers by a company called BULGE that comes in 3 or 4
sizes.  on the back it even lists DeLorean as a car to choose the right size
for.
only about $30, fits just fine, but probably not for extended outdoor use.

There's really a lot to consider when designing headers. Larger tubes are
more free flowing but small tubes have a better scavenging characteristic.
Longer headers maintain good scavenging and increase torque. They create a
column of exhaust that actualy pulls the exhaust from the combustion
chamber. As RPMs increase the velocity increases and shorter headers work
better. The engines performance charateristic in regards to what RPM range
that power and torque are developed has to be the deciding factor in the
design.  Headers also need a straight shot out of the head for at least a
couple of inches to prevent exhaust gases from piling up at the exhaust
port. It's also very important that the tubes are equal length. The DeLorean
doesn't have a whole lot of room for headers to conform to the ideal in
regards to all this but  all of these things have to be considered and
compromises have to be made. The whole idea is to create the right velocity
of exhaust flow and if it's right it not only flows more freely, the
scavenging effect actualy drags exhaust from the combustion chamber until
the RPMs are high enough that velocity alone will push the gases out.

Subject: Re: Exhaust Question: DMCH vs. DMUK.

Hi All

One VERY important point: The stainless system we have on our website is
not one we sell - we simply pass on the information on where to buy it
which is www.stainless-exhaust.com - it would be a bit crafty to re-sell
it since the original "investment" was made by DeLorean Owners Club
secretary, Chris Parnham to the gain of the DOC in general, of which I'm
a proud member and was webmaster for several years before starting DMUK.
The system is, however, a prerequesite to most of our performance
upgrades. And before I get another 20 or so off-list mails about them,
we approach the fuel system differently in that we get rid of the lambda
system which immediately rules out our upgrades for the US as it sends
the emissions too high to be able to use cats.

As to performance: The stainless sytem available here provides a lot
more torque, and a modest high-end gain, with approriate tweaking of the
fuelling (richening it up to beyond the band controlled by the lambda
system). I have heard that the DMCH system is a better overall exhaust -
and given the headers, I can believe that, but doubt it has more than a
couple of hp gain over the stainless system - this is the opinion of Don
at Stainless Exhaust.

Club member, Robin Simpson wrote of his new system, fitted last week
(removing completely stock system including cat):

Got my D back yesterday after, among other things, having the
stainless exhaust from Don Pemberton fitted along with new manifold
gaskets - what a transformation !

Not only does it now sound like it should, it breathes much better
and is much more flexible throughout the rev-range - it's like having
a new car !! Having not had her at home for a week, it was quite like
going to collect her for the first time - god I love my 'D' !

There are basically 3 "tones" available for the stainless system: Quiet
sounds like an original exhaust. Medium has a nice bass note at idle but
screams at high revs in a way that I can only describe as "more
european". Standing still and revving it sounds like a very loud
chainsaw to my ears and when I first heard it, I was slightly put
off.... until I heard Chris Parnham doing a "drive-by" whilst
accellerating to the red line. In that, it sounds fantastic. The Loud
system is the closest you'll get the DeLorean engine to sound like the
BTTF effects sounds, but it's LOUD, in fact the club member who fitted
it claimed the engine was quieter without the back box!

I have driven one of DMCH's 197hp 5-speeds. I have also modified my own
engine in #1458 with a metering head, CPR and, most importantly,
ignition distributor from a Volvo B28E engine, which "out of the box"
had no cats and no lambda system, and is meant to be tuned to 1.5% CO
with an output of 170hp. I have a cat bypass pipe, but everything else
is stock. My first impression of the DMCH car was that it lacked torque
- I can happily hold the revs up on my car, allowing the clutch to slip
and get me "off the line" in a tyre-sqealing launch followed by a
gloriously constant torque curve that see the revs rising rapidly from
2000rpm to the red line, whereupon I feel as if it would just keep
going, so change up. This works all the way through the gears, but I
haven't had the bottle to take it as far as it'll go in 5th. The DMCH
car by comparison, was difficult to launch off the line at the Houston
raceway, but once the revs built up, definitely gave that "gravity
moving from my arse to me back" feeling that my car doesn't. I look
forward to putting a stainless system (no cats of course) on my own car,
but at the moment we've got too many customers cars in for me to have
the time to work on my own! However, one of these cars is getting a
stainless exhaust as well as the 170hp upgrade. I'm looking forward to
taking it down the road. It has its steering wheel on the wrong side too...

Hi everyone, I drive my Delorean daily, and I want to
bypass the cat. Where can I buy a bypass pipe? Would
it be cheaper to build one? Has anyone tried to build
one? Any info. would be great!  THANKS Casey  VIN 3270

If you are looking for a clutch, you might want to try Don Steger at
DMC in Garden Grove, California.  There is a link on the dmcnews web
site.  I got a centerforce clutch in my car.  Not sure if I like the
clutch or not.  First one didn't last 10k miles, but the guy who did my
clutch didn't get the step right on the flywheel.  I am over 5k miles
now on the second clutch with the correct step height on the flywheel
and seems to be holding good for now.
