Tilley EV Demo Skids on Wheel Bearing Failure
Review of aborted demonstration of Carl Tilley's electric vehicle with
endless charger on board at Nashville Superspeedway Sept. 7, 2002.

Press Release
Sept. 8, 2002 1:35 am MST

by Sterling D. Allan

Anticipating 10,000 spectators to see his "back to the future" DeLorean
converted to an electric car with endless charger, inventor Carl Tilley
met with massive disappointment when a wheel bearing gave out after a few
warm-up laps Saturday, Sept. 7 at the 80,000-seat Nashville Superspeedway,
attended by a meager 200 people, mainly consisting of regional die hard
fans of alternate energy technologies.

"DeLorean's are notorious for this," commented a DeLorean owner in
attendance. "I had two bearings go out in one month once."

I am doing a few articles for the April and next falls issue and found out

that I do not have decent photos of two items.

One is the Toby Tabs
I could use a photo of the product itself and of the installation.

We are also doing an article on the PVR Engine and while I have shots of
motors being changed they are not very good.

I will follow up in a few days with a more specific list on this project
as
we lay out the article.

Any thoughts or data is appreciated'

Interesting - I had similar issues with mine. The tire shop was
unable to get the tire off the rim, although I've not heard of this
problem being widespread (I probably have a dumb tire shop guy). I
had them break the tire bead down from the rim, and then spent some
quality time with some emery cloth and steel wool cleaning up the rim
with the tire in place (I stuck some wood blocks in to hold the tire
away from the rim.). Works fine now. There is some sealant that can
help too.

The problem is caused by the 3 pieces of foam that are installed in
the bottom of the tire compartment. If any moisture gets in there
(and it does, thru the floor and the lid) the rim rusts and starts
leaking. Take out the foam and put some other weatherstripping in
there that only contacts the tire, not the rim.

Any shop with a tire machine and bead sealer could do it. Some shops
won't though because they have been told to never dismount the
"doughnut" spare tires, they weren't meant to be serviced so most have
this warning on the tire. The "secret" here is that they MUST use bead
sealer. If there is any corrosion on the bead of the rim it must first
be removed and made as smooth as possible. Before you let them touch
it ask if they even have bead sealer, if they don't or the can is old
and the sealer is hard go somewhere else. After it is fixed it should
hold 60 psi for a long time. Before I sealed my tire it wouldn't hold
overnight! The spare tire on ANY car should be checked monthly along
with the other 4. It would be bad enough to get suprised with a flat,
you wouldn't want another surprise when you take the spare out! BTW
keep a large plastic bag in with the spare tire just in case you have
to put the flat tire on the passenger seat.

That connector is hanging under the resistor on my car also. I have an
automatic so I can't tell you if it is used in the 5-speed till I look
at a 5-speed. There are more than just a couple of plugs that don't go
anywhere. There were probably some items that were either planned or
decided not to be used. Two things come to mind, the heated side
mirrors, and the hot start relay and the diagnostic plug. I think it
is just a case of the wiring harness being laid out early on in design
and then due to cost and production considerations some things just
don't get into production. Of course there is also the case that some
things are different between the 5-speed and the automatic. Unless you
have an electrical problem just leave the plugs alone.
