To my great surprise, when I got home from work yesterday the
commencement issue of the DeLorean Motor Club's DeLorean
International Magazine was waiting in my mailbox.  The cover picture of
the wooden mockup in Ulster is very cool.

I haven't finished reading it yet, but I noticed a unique feature that I
wanted to point out to everyone else who has it.  The picture of Ken
Koncelik on page 9 was obviously taken at the DMC Houston (former
Kapac) warehouse in Columbus, Ohio.  If you look behind Ken, you can
see a stack of never-used DeLorean frames from the factory.

Naturally, the reprint of Knut's "Historical Prices" article is great.
It will be
particularly valuable to any first time DeLorean shoppers (if they didn't
already read it in the DeLorean Club of Oregon's newsletter).

Subject: DML: Air Conditioner Electrical Problem

Two years ago my air conditioner quit working.  Based on advice from
the DML I assumed a freon leak.  I asked Walt, my mechanic, to find the
leak and recharge the A/C for me.

Circling my car with his freon sniffer, Walt eventually found the tiny
leak.
It was in a small fitting on the heat exchanger at the front of the car.
As
he tightened the fitting, Walt remarked:

"How about that.  Fifteen years old, and the only thing wrong with the air
conditioner is a loose fitting . . . I wish every car were made as well as
the DeLorean!"

Recently my A/C stopped working again.  Assuming another leak I took it
to Walt.  To my surprise he found the freon charge is still full!  The
reason
my compressor fails to engage seems to be purely electrical, and it's up
to me to figure it out.

I found excellent A/C electrical diagnostic advice in DML the backissue
dated 6/14/97.  However, my problem is different from that.  Instead of
cycling every three seconds, my compressor does not cycle at all.  I
know the system is getting some power, because when the system is
turned on the fuse gets hot but does not blow.

Does anyone have advice for me?

Yeah, I was told the same thing, and I didn't think I was doing so...
Well,
I'm going back to get a vaccum modulator installed next week, I'll have

I guess I opened a can of worms by offering to send the bus brochure. I've
been beseiged with requests and it's really a bit time consuming as it's a
six page color brochure and I have a slightly aging computer.
Travis was kind enough to list his web site so it's readily available

no

1) Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery.
2) Push the drivers seat all the way back or better yet take it out.
3) Laying on your back, looking under the dash, remove the two knee/shin
pads on either side of the steering column. The parts manual calls them
"FR ROLL DRIVER". Each pad has four nuts (10mm socket)holding it to the
dash.
4) There are six smaller nuts holding the binnacle to the dash, four
with big flat washers (1-1/4"D) where the binnacle attaches to the
fibreglass dash, and two nuts at the steering column attaching bracket.
I don't remember the socket size, maybe 8mm. The binnacle should easily
pull up now.
5) There are two large connectors and the speedometer cable attached to
the back of the binnacle. Grasp the connectors on the sides to release
the locks holding them in place. Unhook the speedometer cable by
depressing the spring clip where the cable goes into the back of the
instrument panel. (This is where you need three hands.) Push in the
spring, pull back on the speedo cable, and hold the binnacle at the same
time.
6) Your done.....

While you have the binnacle off, take a pair of needle nose pliers and
pull out the inner speedo cable, lube it in 90 Gear Oil and slip it back
in the casing.

I also "adjusted" the front binnacle bracket because the binnacle was
sitting on top of my steering column which would only go half way up in
adjustment height. Now when I'm driving I can see the instrument panel
without looking under the steering wheel.

Good Luck,
Dave Sontos

Took it for granted since you didn't know therefore you must be a younger

I remember the time before Dexron II, when Dexron was only the auto

Folks:

I saw something very interesting recently. I was at one at, I think, Jiffy
Lube getting an oil change. They were promoting some new fangled device
they had that replaced all of the oil in the transmission. Apparently it
sucks out all 9 or so quarts out and pumps in fresh transmission fluid, of
your choice (conventional or synthetic) back into the car. That way you
are
assured of a 100% old change verse diluting old oil with new oil.

Hello everybody,

The other week I was in some shop here in my town when all of a sudden I
saw
all sorts of car hifi-installation-stuff, like loudspeakers and all, with
the name DeLorean on them. It might be coincedence and all, but I doubt
that. The typing they used on the products was also rather futuristic,
though not the same as the typing used by the DeLorean Motor Company.

Does anybody know more about these products?

Greetings from Arnie Schurink!

I think 3.6 pints was the final drive, which in my car is full of ATF
instead of the gear oil it should have.  I guarantee you that at least
FOUR
QUARTS are necessary as I found out the hard way when my tranny slipped
its
way down 100 miles of asphalt ribbon after I replaced my governor
computer a
couple of months ago.  The level is VERY difficult to check because every
time you add some you completely cover the dipstick and the thing looks
full, even if you wipe / insert / wipe / insert, etc. TEN times or more
like
I did.  I found out the hard way that with 3.6 pints of ATF it's like you
don't even have a tranny - the car will not move in any gear.  If it
slips,
add more!

I just thought I'd relate my air conditioning story; I recently bought a
Canadian DeLorean, which is low mileage (or is that kilometerage?) and had
spent most of it's time garaged.  The owner told me that the A/C had never
been serviced, that she hadn't used it, and that she doubted if it was in
working order.  I traveled up there, fully expecting to have to recharge
the A/C at the least.  But to my surprise, it had one of the coldest A/Cs
I've ever experienced in a car, and on the original charge of freon!

Rod,
Try this, locate the rubber grommet that surrounds the steering column at
the fire wall, and give it a shot of WD-40. If the problem goes away it
means that this rubber part has dried out and needs to be replaced.

Sounds like you have a worn out steering rack.  The same thing
happened to me last year.  I wanted to replace the rack, but I discovered
that not all of the normal DeLorean parts suppliers have them.  Bauerle
Automotive's ad in DeLorean World Magazine specifically mentions that
they have the racks, so I called them and ordered one.

That fixed the problem perfectly.  You can find Bauerle Automotive listed
as a DeLorean parts supplier in DeLorean World Magazine or at the DOA
website. Dave Bauerle's phone number is (614) 595-3348

Note that driving with a worn out rack can be dangerous.  Your front
wheels can suddenly begin to shimmy for no reason.  If this is the
problem you have then I suggest you repair it immediately.

Yes, Rod I got my car a few months ago and mine is the same way.  I have
gone
to great lenghts to oil the stearing column, to no real improvement.  I am
wondering if it is because of my tires which are Dunlop, and most people
are
recommending other brands.  The stickiness is not noticeable when the
front
tires are off the gound by jacking up the car.  Jordan Gary

I notice the same thing on mine. The steering is VERY sensitive, but it
only
seems to want to turn in "increments" as if some gear splines line up at
certain points only. Not real smoothly as you say. I too am curious as to
how common this is.

You may want to try JC Whitney ( http://www.jcwhitneyusa.com ) they have a
"fog horn" replacement.. that may suit your needs....

Actually the brand is Phillips, and I've yet to find a place to buy our
size
headlights.  JC Whitney sells them in the "other" larger size...  I'm
still
lookin' though..  Phillips contacted me and said there are only two places
to get them, JC Whitney and some auto parts distributor, but the number
Phillips gave me wasn't a retail/mailorder number, it was for their
dealers...?

Todd,
Generic replacement horns are readily available at most auto supply
stores.
Be sure to get one "hi note" and one "low note" single terminal unit, a
relay is not required. If you want more volume specify 130db, if you can't
find one check out JC Whitney out of Chicago (13YV3190A high freq. &
13YV3191R low freq.) 12.95 ea..

I've notice the price of R-12 Freon dropping.

As discussed before, there have been some R-12 Blends that are being
sold as cheaper R-12 refrigerant.

In discussion with a local AC mechanic about the dropping prices, he
told me that it is not uncommon for blends to now be advertised as "Pure
R-12".  What surprised me was what the R-12 was blended with.

Many of the cheaper "Pure" R-12's are blended with Propane!  The up side
is that Propane actually cools better than R-12, and is non-CFC.  But,
the down side is that a small leek could make you and your
Delorean....Well.. Dead!

He included some stories that could be fact or urban legend, but either
way be aware of this when purchasing R-12.  This mechanic had a machine
that would tell him the purity of the R12/R134A, but the real kicker is
that (he claims) when he has detected propane, the propane breaks the
machine!

I had considered this.  Even went as far as to buy new horns.  Then, I
honked the horn a few times with the doors open.  I realized that they
are pretty loud already, they just seem low in the car.

I do prefer the sound of a American horn better, but I kept it original
and returned the replacement horns.

Does anybody know if you can oil the rack without removing it.  The manual
talks about removing it and putting gear oil in the left side.  But I wonder
if
I could put a small hose from a manual pump into the rack.  I am thinking of
loosening up the drivers side stearing rack boot (where you adjust the tie
rod
ends) and pumping in some oil.  Will this help?  My car only has 40,000
miles
and I doubt that the rack is worn out.  It has no excess play in it.  Jordan

Hi All,
I don't know where you got this brochure, but it doesn't look to be
real. I mean that this bus on a picture is just a regular FFG German
bus (prototype to be exact). It's not made by DMC and the DMC-80 logo
is added to the picture and it's not done very well. I don't believe
that this bus was made by or for DMC. Thanks.

Hey!  Where was this message four hours ago?  I just got back from
Sears (Liffy Lube) to get the system charged!    Although I looked
at the tank they were pulling the freon out of, and there wasn't any
indication from the label on it that there was anything in there but
R-12.....   It was $50/lb (and even though they put in 2.2, they only
charged me $100)  How much did it used to be if the prices have
dropped? (or did I pay the high price?)

I, too, thought the DMC horns were a bit easy to ignore.  I installed
German "hella's".  They are not "American" sounding, but they do get your
attention.  Easy fit - no re-wiring.

Subject: DML: DeLoreans in Movies

A while back there was discussion about which movies have had
DeLoreans in them.  Today I was watching a movie called "Quack
Busters".  Its a Daffy Duck and Buggs Bunny movie.  During the beginning
of the movie Daffy is being a sales man and he is trying to see cars.
Guess what type of  car he is selling? You guessed right! DeLoreans!!!
Of coarse the cars in this animated movie look nothing like the real
thing.  I just thought it was pretty cool and that some others might
like to rent the movie so they can see the cartoon version of the D.
Another thing I have recently observed is that there is a new movie
coming out soon that uses the good old BTTF theme song in the
commercial.  I may go see the movie just so I can hear the BTTF music in
it.  I think the name of the movie is "Little Soldier".  It sounds like
it may be a stupid movie but I may just go see it anyway.

Subject: DML: AC Idler Pulleys Bearing Replacement Procedure

Today, my wife and I went out for Idian Food at lunch time.  Now I have
been tinkering with my DeLorean all spring.  This is the first time she
has riden in it in a year.

So of course something goes wrong, the bearings for the AC idler pulleys
go bad.  We heard a growl and rumbling noise while sitting in traffic in
downtown Mobile.  If you didn't know, we are having a heat wave.
Imagine trying to breath while in a steam bath, yep, thats Mobile
Alabama.

I went down to "Motion Industries" and bought two 6202 sealed bearings
for $6.52 each.

To change the bearings do the following:

Removal
Apply penetrating oil
Loosen lower idler bolts  11 mm
Back out belt tightning bolt  13 mm
Remove belt
Remove upper idler  11 mm
Remove lower idler  11 mm
NOTE:  Remember where the spacers go, and do not lose the O-ring behind
the head block cover plate.
Clean pulleys, apply penetrating oil
Remove nut and stud assembley, note direction that pulleys are mounted
on brackets
Remove tru-arc clips
Find a socket or piece of pipe that fits the OD of the bearing, drive
the bearing out.

Installation
Clean pully ID
Carefully, tap the bearing in the pully using the socket that fits the
OD of the bearing.
Stand the car up on its nose to facilitate assembley
Apply anti sieze to all bolt threads
Install head block cover plate, clean o-ring and lightly oil, use lower
bolt
Install upper pully assembley with long 11 mm bolt, right hand side
Remove head block cover plate lower bolt
install lower pully assembly with lower bolt, use long spacer here
Install the bolt that you removed from the head block cover plate, use
the short spacer here.
Tighten the upper bolt
Install belt
Tension belt
Tighten all bolts
Put the car back down on all four wheels.

If you were unable to stand the car up on its nose, an anti-gravity
device would be nice, or perhapes if you have four tiny hands, you won't
end up swearing as much as I did.

It really wasn't that bad, the short spacer was thge most difficult part
to put in.  Next time, if I remember, I will glue the spacer in place
with some silicon.

Total cost of repair
$13.06

Actual repair time
1 hour

Of the two cars we had on our stand at the Birmingham show, the "younger"
one
definitely had a louder and better horn when it came to the
end of the show and every car in the place let rip :-)

It leads me to wonder if it wasn't just the bonnets, tailpipes etc. that
were
changed throughout the production run...

Hope you don't all blame the weedy horn on it being "European" :-)

Best Wishes,

Martin

Hornzilla, Yes indeed!

I too have found the original horn to be simply pathetic in volume and
pitch.

The real problem I seem to be encountering is the lack of basic horn
information. There are lots of horns, with various db ratings and High
pitch, Low pitch, but I don't understand anything about horns, why is a
high +low recommended as opposed to say two High or two low units. What if
any is the db range permitted? are there DOT rules that deal with auto
horns?

Not so long ago while in San Francisco I heard two very different auto
horns, one sounded like a bird chirping??? it was very odd sounding, I
could not tell which Low rider car it was. On the same day I also heard one
that sounded like an elephant farting, it was low in freq, very lowed and
got my attention, but I did not really associate it with a car horn at
first!

When I was a kid my dads car had an "AHooogggaaaahhhh" horn he ran by
pushing down on a rounded peddle on the top of the horn. I like that one.

Any one have comments on auto horn theory? application, restrictions.
