The truth of the matter is that originally it was thought to be illegal to
have the fuel cap in the same compartment as the luggage, hence the
separate
fuel filler flap. But eventually once it was discovered that there was no
real legal problem the flap was done away with.

I never heard of any bent valves from broken timing chains on any of the
Volvo (or DeLorean) engines I've heard of. Most cases your timing chain
will not break randomly but will start to wear noticeably first. You will
notice it start to rattle and/or leak oil from the tensioner before it
wears out in most cases. You really don't want the timing chains to break
on the DeLorean because there is an automatic tensioner to compensate for
wear on the timing chains. This tensioner takes the form of a
spring(?)-loaded piston which takes up the slack in the chain much the
same way that a bicycle shifter gear takes up the slack when you shift. If
the timing chain breaks this piston will travel all the way out and damage
itself. To fix all this you have to take the heads apart which is a
difficult task in itself because you're not allowed to mill the heads. If
you mill the heads then the timing chain won't fit properly any more and
you will leak oil out of the aforementioned tensioner. Yay for French
engines. :}

I not sure if the DeLorean engine is an interferance engine or not but one
problem, while probably some what rare, regarding timing chains is related
to chain tension. The tensioners are hydraulicly tensioned by engine oil
coming through a small passage behind the tensioner. This passage has a
small plastic filter screen that can become distorted enough to block oil
flow if overheated severly. The result would be slack in the timing chain
on one bank, or both banks of the engine, as there is a tensioner and
chain
for each bank. I don't think this is too common an experience but still,
it
can happen.

October 31, 1998
The car show at Hooter's was held yesterday. The weather in Mobile
Alabama was fantastic. We had 9 DeLoreans, 10 owners, and 2 owners to
bes in attendance along with Steve Wynne and Super DMC Mechanic Bill.
I'm not postive, but we either had the most cars in a marque or were
tied.
Orlando Lopez traveled the furthest distance out of 135+ cars, I believe
his trip from Miami was 700+ miles.
A good example of the type of people that are Delorean owners can be
demonstrated by the fact that several of the owners helped the newest
owner clean his car for the show after they finished theres. Ben
Cummings (mobile) just bought his car and had no time to clean it up.
Several of the guys got out in that hot sun and cleaned it up, it looked
a 100 % better when they were done.
We had our own Judged Class and the awards are as follows:

will be mailed to you.
After the show, everyone came over to my house for a good ol Southeren
BBQ. Ribs that melted in your mouth, potatoe salad, cake, cookies,
snacks, you name it we ate it. The kids put there costumes on and went
trick or treat. I think that we all had lots of fun. My thanks to my
family for all there hard work putting the BBQ together and tolerating
me the last few weeks. Also, thanks to Duke Bladorn for giving us web
space for the info sheets, look to his site in the near future for
pictures from the show.
To all that attended, thank you for coming, we blew the socks off of the
show organizers. There were lots of comments aboout the number of
DeLoreans in attendance. Perhapes next year we can get even more.

Today I degreased the trans, and dragged into the basement to open it up
(later).
No wonder this clutch was stiff - the grease seal for the release fork
pivot was missing, and the ballstud was as dry as a bone. The clip that
holds the release fork to the ballstud is broken, so I may need a new
release fork. The throwout bearing does not slide very easily. I pulled
the clutch and flywheel (had to buy a 6 mm allen bit for the p-plate), as
expected the radial grooves are almost gone on the pressure plate side of
the disc and there is significant wear on the pressure plate. Flywheel
looks great, should not take much to clean it up.
I scraped, wirebrushed, and phosphate-treated the frame directly under
the transmission where the clutch fluid had softened the epoxy. It will
get painted as soon as I get some more surgical gloves (I use Rustguard
(like POR15) and it does NOT come off your hands).
Surprise!! The rear main engine seal does not appear to be leaking at
all. The back of the flywheel is clean, the back of the engine is clean,
and the leakage seems to be just above the starter where the crankcase
girdle meets the engine block, and maybe at the back of the oil pan. Is
this common? The leak is not bad enough to make me pull the engine at
this point - maybe next year. It has never dripped oil on the floor, it's
just wet around the side of the oil pan towards the front of the car.
Maybe tomorrow I'll open up the trans and look for the roll pin problem.
First I have to get a bigger pin punch to get the axle flanges off.

Finally a free morning, my brother and I changed the alternator a while
ago.
Good news, so far it seems to idle smooth, (although a little fast), maybe
the previous "surging" idle was due to the alternator going weak?
The bad news, we jumped it off, running fine, lights and radio come on,
fans come on, allthe gauges are working except the charging indicator,
needle won't budge from the bottom. My brother thinks when the alternator
fried maybe it killed the guage too. Any ideas or experience with this?
And
if that's the problem, anyone have a used working gauge they'll sell?

Carpets:
We have had our first good rain in Dallas, since I bought my 1983 in
July and my both sides of the front carpets are wet.
I read a note from Joe about removing the cover, under the spare tire,
and cleaning out the hose. Any more input available? I traced the hose
from under the car and
it appears to disappear toward the dash, adjacent to the fuel lines. How
do you get at it?
Fanzilla:
Does James Espey still have the Fanzilla for $150.00 and does it bring
any added value over the "pig tail" that I have on it?
Idling:
Mine used to idle at 750 to 800 rpms. Now it is up around 1500. I talked
to DMC Houston and they instructed me to check the connection for the
idle control, but
that did no good. I noticed that if I played with the the wheel that
controls the gas pedal cables, then the speed re-locked in at around 800
rpms. Is their an
adjustment that can be made here or some where else?

Here's a new twist - Question and Answer in the same message.
I took our recently purchased VIN 5102 to the Ohio E-Check pollution
tester and was a little hesitant to let the teenage employees drive it.
But I gave in when I saw the respect they gave it (In fact, each wanted
to do the testing!). The chosen one pulled it up on the Dynamometer
(allows 55 mph while standing still) and got it up to 30 mph before
putting in neutral, and stepping on brake.Engine died immediately!
Imagine my embarrassment when D decided to just not start. Plenty of
cranking power, but no go.
After a day of returning to try to start and a tow home, I finally
decided it was time to refer to the excellent Emergency Situations docs
provided by DeLorean Motor Center. (Available at
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/8952/page10.gif)
Thanks to a little reading about the Inertia Switch, I realized that was
the problem. (Sure enough, one glance told me the plunger was in the up
position). Evidently the E-Check employee had bumped the switch while
trying to find the clutch. Re-setting the switch allowed it to start
right away! (It has since been located in a little safer spot -
remembering to place in direction of travel.)
Thanks again for providing this DML site, and thanks to DeLorean Motor
Center for all the help. I recommend everyone download those pages and
memorize them!

I just wanted to say that I FOUND IT. I was looking through my
brother's
issue of the new Summit Racing Equipment catalog and I found a product
that
race car drivers use to open their doors when they shave the door handles
off
the car. The kit includes Two heavy duty 12 volt solenoids with a 15lb.
pull
rating, Three channel remote module and Two dual button transmitters and
all
the hardware and instructions. There are 2 versions of this kit, one has

Stainless steel door poppers, but because our doors go up and only need
the
latch to open, we don't need them. This kit only cost $96.69 and they
have
them in stock. I already ordered mine and I should get it Wednesday or

Well, the plot thickens. After an evening of creative tool searching, and
some musclepower, I have the transmission case apart. I had to use part
of my door adjusting tool (the 4' socket handle extender) to get the two
mainshaft retaining nuts off. As Joe predicted, there is 1/2 of a roll
pin stuck to the little magnet at the bottom of the shifter-half of the
case. So far I've only shot one ball bearing across the basement, and we
found it right away.
Now the mystery - the broken roll pin appears to be part of the 1-2 shift
bar. The 1-2 bar has three roll pins, the broken one is the one in the
center that goes against the slot in the fork. The 3-4 bar appears fine,
and no other roll pins look broken. No other stray parts.
My initial complaint was that the shift into third is crunchy and that
the shifter jumps around in fourth as I hit and let off the gas. Looking
at the synchros, nothing appears broken, although the 3rd gear syncro
ring appears shinier and maybe a little more worn than the others. No
teeth missing, though. What does a bad one look like? Now I'm mystified -
I found the broken pin, but in my mind it should not be causing the
problems that I have had.
Everything else looks very good, nothing else broken, in fact I'm
impressed with the overall condition of things. It is kind of funny to
notice that the ring gear is flipped over from what is shown in the
manual - I see how one could get in trouble with this.
Any new ideas out there? Joe? Should I start looking for another trans?

I decided to clean the engine and change the oil and filter today on our
DeLorean. I added six quarts. The level is still below the first
triangle mark. what level should I bring it to.
I've been searching the archives to find out how many quarts of oil the
engine holds. The best I could find was 7 to 8 qts. I thought I saw
something that stated the exact volume somewhere. At one time I thought
I saw an odd number like 71/2. BTW, There is also a recommended wt. of
20/50. Is 30 wt. o.k. for Arizona.

Hello all, I know you've probably heard the scenario a hundred times
of the person who is "so close" to purchasing a D., and has the usual
questions, so I'll try to be a little different. For the past couple
of months I have been saving and still current doing any odd job I can
(including stuffing envelopes to the brink of insanity, still currently
doing it...)to get the money to buy this unique piece of automotive
history. I just have a few questions and excuse me if they have been
addressed in the past (I've read almost all the back issues, but not
all). I live in western North Carolina and I was curious if there were
any places in the vicinity (n.c. or sc or ga.) that are qualified to
service D.'s. I know that parts arent that difficult to find, although
some costly, but my problem is that I don't know of anywhere I could
take it to have it serviced should a problem occur short of shipping it
somewhere like D1. If any D. owners that are out there that read this
that live around where I do, I was also wondering if I could meet you
and see your car (I've only seen one in a museum and on the road once
when I was 8). I understand you may get this alot, but to put it in my
friends words: I am obsessed with this car. I would drive anywhere but
even the chance to talk about the car and your experiences with it would
make my day. I am hoping to have enough money by june of next year (my
birthday present to myself) and would appreciate any info anyone could
give me about ownership, etc.
Another note: Has anyone noticed the similarity of the rear
reverse/brake/turn light assembly on the '92 Camaro is strikingly
similar to that of the D? Or has anyone noticed it was in the movie "The
Wedding Singer" If its been discussed in the past, I apologize.

Subject: DML: Front end lifting
I know that there have been threads on how best to lift a Delorean to work
on it. But here's a problem I'm having. My local mechanic, who is the
most respected and reliable person in our area, does not have a lift. He
uses a hydralic unit that is put under the front or back. It's about 5 ft
long with two arms about 2 feet apart connected together. It's hard to
really describe it but I'm sure it's a standard small shop kind of thing
used in place of an actual 4 point lift.
Question: is there an adequate place on my car for this unit to lift up
the front end? I talked with him on the phone the other day and he said
that all cars should have the strength to be raised up or else how could
they withstand the stresses of the road? I mentioned the flexing issue
and
the windshield cracking. He seemes to think that if the front end is
lifted up as a whole (not just one side) it should be fine with no flexing
taking place. He has no problem taking a close look underneath to
investigate the possibilities but I wanted to get some advise prior to
going to see him. I don't want to punch a hole in a place that "looks"
solid.

On my D I had a leak problem caused by the passenger side hood bumper (I
think that is what it is called) not having a nut holding it down thereby
allowing water to run underneath the washer and into the blower/fan motor.
As soon as I put a nut on it the leaking stopped.
To get to the bottom of the hood bumper I had to remove the blower/fan
assembly in the foot area of the passenger side. With that removed I
could
look up with a flashlight and see where the nut would go. I don't know if
there is a better way to get to it, but that is how I did it.
I would assume that missing a nut on the drivers side would result in the
same problem.

I read a note from Joe about removing the cover, under the spare tire,
and cleaning out the hose. Any more input available? I traced the hose
from under the car and
it appears to disappear toward the dash, adjacent to the fuel lines. How
do you get at it?

Remove your windshield wipers and then the grill between the hood and
windshield. Put some silicone seal on the screws that hold the grill
in place and reinstall. This did the trick on my previous D.

Apparently the previous owner replaced the driver's side rear wheel at

In regards to your idle problem. MY D did the same thing . It would idle
high and when I went and played with the throttle cable connection at the
engine it would return to normal. I fould out that my throttle cable
frayed
at the petal end and would not alow the cable to retun completely. All I
needed was a new inner throttle cable and about a half hour of time.

Hello all
Another day with the D.
My girlfriend washed the car and after some stainless polish we went for a
sunday drive.... about 30 min later the engine quit. We restarted 4 times
in less than 5 minutes. We rested for about 25 minutes and then restarted
and drove home. I have not driven the car since sunday.
What do you think the problem is??
