The updates related to the front suspension were as follows:  It was
discovered that the area of the frame where the sway bar brackets are
attached had an 'oil can' effect when pressure was put on the sway bar
during the normal movement of the front suspension. Re-enforcing plates,
along with heavier mounting brackets were designed to be added to the car.
At the same time the nyloc nuts used to secure the upper and lower ball
joints to the spindle brackets were replaced with castelated nuts and
holes
were to be drilled through the ball joint studs for cotter keys. Also the
nuts that secured the sway bar to the lower control arm were beefed up by
adding a second nut, behind the original nut. to double the load at that
joint.

The second recall involved lubricating the throttle cable, back at the
throttle spool, with antifreeze. Then a sheild was installed over the
throttle spool to keep water from getting to it. In cold weather the
throttle could freeze and become inoperable.

That's your problem.  You filled it up too much.  Just don't "top it off"
next time, and you shouldn't have a problem.  Just put the pump in "slow"
mode and when it stops itself, that's as much as you should put in.

it's a BTTF conversion.  If you're interested, I'm sure most places that
sell JL toy cars will have it.  It's part of a series of famous TV and

Chip,
The factory contents were auctioned in May 1984 and the buildings lay
vacant
for some years.  A French company called Montupet which manufactures
cylinder
heads and alloy wheels commenced production at the factory in April 1990.
Another part of the former DeLorean factory is also occupied by Shorts-
Bombardier who make aircraft.
There have been two major DeLorean European Expos held at the factory. 
One in
1993, the other in 1997.  The next one is scheduled for May 2001.  These
events give DeLorean owners and enthusiasts from around the world the
opportunity to see the factory building, meet some of the original
workers,
and best of all drive the test track.

Jameel,
Your idle problem is due to one of two things; Either the idle speed
system
or the fuel frequency valve. To check the idle speed circuit pull the plug
off of the idle speed regulator while the engine is idling, if there is no
change in the idle speed the problem is in this circuit. Try this test
with
the engine both cold and warm, let me know the results.

Jar,
The service recalls your talking about are suspension related, the paint
marks were required by the factory for identification purposes. Most
DeLoreans have had the modification work but some may have been done by
owners therefore there may be no paint markings. Additionally many
dealerships did the recall but did not add the paint markings. I would
suggest you have a qualified DeLorean mechanic inspect the car for these

My guess is that you didn't properly take the car back to 1981 to fill it
up.  You should - the gas was cheaper then and parts more easily available
too. :}

Modern gas pumps top off your tank whether you want them to or not.  The
owner's manual specifically says not to top off the tank, but sometimes
you have no choice.  This will cause some gas to spill over the top.  This
is a real problem on the D because then you can smell the gas as it
rattles around in the luggage compartment.  It should go away after a
while.  My only suggestion is to listen for when the tank starts to get
full, then set the fuel pump nozzle on the lowest flow (or just stop
filling it then).  This should prevent any gas from spilling over.  If you
still smell the gas after a few days have gone by, especailly if you have
burned a gallon or two of gas or more, then you mgiht have a bigger
problem.

Subject: DML: Fuel Filter Replacement

Hello

         replaced my fuel filter with a Purolater cross reference
After I installed it I ran the car to check for leaks and then finished
up. When  I tried to restart the car about 1/2 hour later, it would not
start. Any Ideas= to fix?
        In addition I noticed that my Lambda sensor was disconnected at
the connection infront of the drivers rear wheel. The wheel needs to be
removed to see it. I guess that a rock flew up and hit it. Check yours
out.

Subject: DML: Winter Projects for the DeLorean

Now that Winter is upon us I am making up my list of projects for the
DeLorean now that it will be staying in the garage for the next several
months.

1. Change oil and filters in auto transmission and engine.
2. Remove front and rear facias and have them repainted at local paint
shop.
3. Check frame for rust spots and sand and repaint.
4. Spare tire has dry rot, get new one. Need to check local tire shop.
5. Finish installing new fuel injectors in cylinders 1 & 2 now that I
have the new injector seals.
6. Replace the rubber door seals.
7. Tighten cooling system hose clamps and pressure check.
8. Check brake pads.
9. Adjust drivers door latch mechanism so I can open the door from the
outside.
10. Figure out some way to keep the rear interior light from always
falling out.
11. Install a diode in the clock circuit to keep it from resetting every
time I turn on the AC.

I hope this list sparks some ideas for other owners and maybe add some
ideas of there own.

Subject: DML: Impact Switch

For the second time in the past three years I have suffered
a melt down in the impact switch.  At $40.00+ a crack this
is getting expensive---not to mention embarrassing.

I was in a McDonalds drive through this last time that it
quit.  There I was with my coffee & egg McMuffin & the thing
wouldn't start.  Thank JZD for the foresight to have the
doors open in such confined spaces!  I managed to roll the
car into a parking space & contemplate the situation while
having breakfast.  Since this had happened once before I was
sort of familiar with the symptoms.  No fuel pump buzz when
the ignition switch is first turned on.  I didn't have my
manuals with me (I was working in Louisville that week) &
couldn't remember which pins to jumper.  Lesson learned -
always carry a copy of the service manual!  I was able to
borrow a voltmeter & sort of figure out what each pin did. I
made a jumper out of some telephone wire that I had,
inserted it into the pins that "looked" right...hit the key
& the fuel pump buzzed merrily away.  A little electrical
tape to keep the jumper in place & I was outa there!!!

After the long story the short (sic) question, what fried
the switch again?  The only current that is handled by the
switch is the fuel pump.  Since I haven't heard of this
happening to others on a regular basis I have to assume that
there is something peculiar about my situation....any
suggestions?

Hi Dave,
Maybe I can help with #10.  I had the same problem until I added foam door
insulation to the front and rear of the light.  It took two layers to
create
enough of a shelf to keep the light in place.  You may need more or less,
depending on the shrinkage.  I used 3/8ths inch wide, dark gray/black
tape.

This brings up an issue that I must soon face.  Is the DeLorean fuel tank
really intended to be sealed so poorly?  Is there nothing I can do to
improve it?

Ohio's E-Check program has just added a gas tank pressure examination
to its emissions test.  They remove the gas cap, attach a snorkel, and
pump the air out of the tank.  Unless the car holds a certain vacuum
pressure for a long enough time the car cannot get license plates.

I called the E-Check people, and they told me that the gas cap of every
car should make a "pop" sound when it is removed.  If it does not then it
will probably fail the test.

My DeLorean's gas cap has never made a "pop" sound.  I don't think
I have ever heard one that did.

Next year my DeLorean must take this new test for the first time.  Does
anyone know what I can do to prepare for it?

I recently replaced my fuel filter as well..  Did you try to crank for
just a second, and leave the key in "run" to keep the fuel pump on
for a while?

I had the same thing happen at the McDonalds at I-71 and Montgomery Road
in Cincinnati - except I went inside to eat (never eat in your D!). When
I came out, the D would not start.  After an embarassing AAA haul home
and the afternoon off work, I finally realized I had bumped the Inertia
Switch and disabled it.

My gut feeling (no pun intended) is that the DeLorean is just too classy
to be seen at McDonald's. This problem never occurs at Taco Bell.

Hello

I replaced my fuel filter and after I started the car for about 5 minutes
the damn piece of $&!%  will not start again.

It will turn over and sputter for 20 seconds then quit.The car went
through a $14,000 service in August of this year.
New fuel system, electric system etc, etc.
What should I do?

I'm going to hazard a guess here and say that the problem is maybe not one
to worry about.  Rather than the problem being one of the tank leaking, I
think it's one of the gas just flowing over the top.  If the leakage/
spillage occurs only at the cap/mouth of the filler pipe, then it's not
something to worry about as the hose they use should form a tight seal.
If there is a leakage at the junction of the tank and the filler pipe, or
in the tank itself, that will be a problem.

They're probably assuming that the cap is one of the modern pressure
kind.
My '55 Jeep does NOT have a pressurized cap and does not make the popping
noises, whether the tank leaks or not (it doesn't).  I have also never put
it through a tank pressure test (we don't have them in Colorado, and it's
emission exempt anyway).  My '90 Geo, however, does have a pressurized cap
and it makes a giant sucking sound every time I take it off.  The two
kinds of caps are very easy to tell apart.  The non-pressure kind fits on
like the cap that holds the ball in a mouse and locks on with tabs.  The
pressure kind is more like a child-proof cap on a medicine bottle.  I have
to admit, I have absolutely no idea what building up all this vacuum in
the tank is supposed to accomplish.  But that's what they do.

Re the Ohio gas tank pressure test:

None of my current three cars produces a "pop" when the gas cap is removed
- - - however, I must admit that they are 4, 16, and 31 years old,
respectively.

I'm not so sure that our tanks are "sealed so poorly".  The ONLY time I
have experienced fumes is when I have overfilled the tank.

Just a thought: record a "pop", hide a cassette player in the trunk and
have it activated by a micro-switch which is triggered by the removal of
the gas cap.  If the "pop" is impressive enough, perhaps they'll pass you
without the rest of the test.

Richard,
Any excess current in this circuit should be handled by the fuse. There
was
a recall notice (SC-06 7/82 No. RA-0003) involving all 81 model year cars
and 82's up to Vin 11127 which required relocation and replacement of the
inertia switch due to a manufacturing defect. It may be possible that both
of your switches were the early defective versions. Check with your supply
source for details. And yes, it is very wise to keep a copy of your
service
manual in your car.

the 2 key system. Door key ahs the little flashlight and the ignition key

Maybe, just maybe, it's the McDonalds that's causing the
problem......

I did check the switch to see if it had been tripped
accidently & that seemed OK.  The engine had died a couple
of times while I was sitting in line but had restarted, it
wasn't until I was actually at the window that it went
totally dead.  (Fumes from the fries?)

Does anyone have an idea of the normal current draw for the
fuel pump?

pass??

With New Jersey installing the new Dyno emission testing, this has been
a thorn in my side for some time.

        It has been said, and there is a report that a major stockholder

Dennis Thatcher. Husband to Former Prime Minister Margaret Thacher.  You
Figure it out, but don't quote me on it, that would be a "confict of
interest". Do some research.

To follow up on Dick's comments:  I just had my car smogged here in Los
Angeles, the birthplace of the air police, and for the first time that I
can
remember, they took off the gas cap and pressure tested it  on some kind
of
tube.  The cap passed with flying colors, as did the rest of the car.  I
was
thrilled as I drove home....behind a Muni Bus belching diesel fumes into
my

They want to reduce the emissions caused by gas vapor leaking from the
tank..

In New Jersey, there is some junk they put in the gas in the summer to
reduce the "Evaporation" of gasoline in to the air.  In the winter, they
put the oxygenated junk in, and remove the evaporation junk.

12V tester between ground and the white/purple wire that runs into the RPM
relay, crank the car and watch the light, let me know what happens. Please

This is a good suggestion in theory, unfortunately the RPM relay is
designed to shut the fuel pump off after three seconds if the engine is
not
running.

I do get the gas smell everytime I put gas inn the tank, even if I do not
fill
it.  How can you tell if the leakage is at the junction of the tank and
the
filler pipe?  I checked underneath the spare by removing the plastic, but
I
did not see anything.

List,

 I backed the car out of the Garage, and I see a small amount of red
liquid
on the floor.  I think, Trans leak.  The next day, I went back to the car
to see if it leaked anymore, and it had not. The third day I went out and
there was no more trans fluid, but there was another spot of brown liquid
on the garage floor.  It looks like oil.  Now it is only leaking a little
bit (about the size of a half dollar per day), but the car only has 4800
miles on it so I was not expecting this quite yet.  Any suggestions before
I have a large Buffet of fluid on my garage floor?

Hello all DML members,

Limited edition News

December 98

It looks like I will begin shipping the long awaited Limited
editions around Christmas.

The first 25 will be the pre-paid reservations followed by the rest of
the reservation list as reservation holders answer their individual
availability notice.

Sense I last made a public announcement a few things have changed , some
important, some not  so important and some interesting.

First and foremost the List of 100 has been set now for over a month and
will not change until after the first shipments are completed, so if you
are on that list of 100 you will be contacted.

To find out about payments and money stuff please check the latest post
on the DMC bulletin board at: http://www.totalimmersion.com/dmcboard/

The kits have changed in the last month, and any one who feels they would
like to pass on their reservation because of the changes please contact
me by email at: > lseiler@xxxxxxxxxxxx<<. If you have pre-paid you will
receive an instant refund no questions asked.

The Changes consist of the following:

1. The original bodies were to be a vinyl shell covered with stainless
sheet, or stainless sheet with 24K Gold leaf and then brushed as the
actual DMC is. This is now changed to a Resin shell covered with the
stainless sheet. The reason for this is that the resin body shells are
stable and unaffected by heat, easier to sand and finish and allow easy
modification. The new bodies are not BTTF knock offs but made especially
for the limited edition kits.

2. The original engine CVR was to be functional. This has change the
current engine CVR is a single unit and does not have a movable access
hatch. It is also the wrong shape! which will be corrected in an update
kit available once all the kits are shipped. There is simply no time to
redo this part and still start shipping this month. ( the replacement
part will be included in the engine kit or  FREE to any registered owner
who wants the part).

3. The wheel hubs were all vinyl. Now some will be resin.

4. The door seal frame was to be fully detailed in vinyl. Now it is a
resin unit and requires fitting and the rain gutter must be cut by the
builder. (not hard to do!).

5. The original kits were only going to carry the reservation holders
reservation number and Vin number. This is changed, the kits now have the
reservation holders name lic and vin numbers in a block that states "
this kit created for "...".

Some time late this week or over the weekend I will post some pictures of
the final parts, the box.

Again I want to stress that this is basically a DML member project, with
the point being to create a legitimate Delorean Kit and not some knock
off donor parts required deal, and with the new custom made bodies and
parts I think that we are just about there. At present there are 75
reservations holders that may have a change of heart and pass on
executing their reservation, so in spite of the size of the stand by
list, there is no reason that DML members who get on that list now could
end up with a limited edition Kit. To date about 20 reservation holders
have drop out, and while I have no idea how many more will do this, it
won't hurt to get on the list if you would like a chance.

a Final note:

I am confronted with a singular problem which I would welcome any
suggestions or comments:

Kit number 001 dedicated to JZD was not accepted by JZD. This is a very
special kit as it is both a 24K Gold/or Stainless Kit it also contains
personalized assembly instructions to JZD. There is also a dedication to
JZD on the box cover as the First completed Kit. With out addressing the
issue of acceptance The Kit is by far the singular most valuable Kit of
the Limited numbered edition. The question is what should the disposition
of this kit be?

1. I could sell it to the highest bidder

2. I could have some kind of contest

3. I could have James do some kind of blind radome member selection

4. I could present it to a car Museum some where

5. I could put it on the shelf and sell it to the next guy on the stand
by list like any other unclaimed reservation?

6. I could bury it some where and sell treasure maps with clues to
Delorean owners only

Thats it.
