My car runs fine until I get to my destination and shut it off. I'll =
leave it, and shortly come back to leave and it won't start. It'll crank =
just fine, but won't start. It takes a while, but I do eventually get it =
going. But when I finally do, it'll idle on a few cylinders it seems =
like. But then I'll push on the gas, and it'll run fine. As long as it's =
running, it'll ride beautifully. Could someone please let me know what I =
need?=20
Also,I removed the blower motor for the heating system today and I found =
two clips on the fins of the internal fan. They seem to have been put =
there. Are they there for any specific reason like weights balancing a =
tire? They are perfectly lodged on the fins like they were put there =
intentionally, but I've never heard of any clips on any fan before. They =
are sort of, hooked on like they were made for it. Should I remove them, =
or just leave them be?
Also, the reason I'm taking out this motor is because it not >
squeaks, but I feel almost no air coming out of the vents. I don't think =
the vents are clogged because I don't see anything in there. I already =
had the switch  rebuilt by Grady so that's not the problem. Any =
suggestions on any these problems?

We all have our opinions. I think the muscle car era started in 1956 when
Plymouth introduced the limited edition Fury. The late fifties produced
some
very exciting cars with fuel injected Chevy's and Pontiacs and huge hemi
engined Mopars. There were even T Birds with twin four barrel carbs and a
few with superchargers. The list goes on into the dozens and many were
most
likely already in the scrap heap before John DeLorean came up with the
GTO.
Media hype set that as the start of the Muscle cars but they were off by
several years.

The Island turbo setup is the closest kit to the legend prototype - notice
singular there. #502 is the car with the legend engine in it and it
resides
with Steve Wynne. There is only ONE such engine.

The prototype has no air filter, and also has twin intercoolers. Both
differences from the Island setup. I believe the Island setup uses the
same
IHI turbos.

The crucial difference is that the legend engine was totally rebuilt. It
also
has a clever active wastegate, varying boost pressure with rpms.

The manifolds are made to order by a firm in Nuneaton, UK. I should say
rather, that the whole conversion is done - the manifolds themselves add
about 15bhp on their own. However, I can't see why a set of manifolds
couldn't be purchased together with the free-flow silencer and shipped to
the states for the conversion to be performed by a bit of DIY. HOWEVER,
beware the emissions issues associated with the conversion.

Any further information can be gained from Simon, and I'm sure if interest
is sufficient, he will let me know appropriate information to post to the

Now that the temp is in the -12 degree range here in Maine I have found
that my car has a not-quite-frozen (but almost there!) cable to the
throttle linkage.  The linkage under the recall notice shield works and
moves just fine, but the gas pedal will pull the cable and it will stick.
I was quite suprised needless to say.  This is my first winter with the
car, my other Delorean did not have this problem.  I need to periodically
start it up and let it run, which it will do without touching the gas
pedal...BUT is there anyway to find out exactly where it has tightened
up?
Would a whole new cable assembly solve the problem?

Paul,
Another area you might check is the fuel pump pick up hose. If you hear
the
fuel pump strain when you accelerate and loose power the hose is either
kinked or collapsing and reducing your primary fuel pressure.

De Lorean Limited Edition Shipping

Today January 2, 1999 the first De Lorean Limited Edition Kits shipped.
These kits consisted of several draft kits for final assembly instruction
proofing by two of our DML members/authors and three kits to pre-paid
reservation holders who are accomplished model kit builders.

The balance of the pre-paid kits will ship over the next few weeks as the
assembly instructions are printed and delivered to me. All the master
parts dies cured and are now being used to shoot the various kits
parts.

I have finally photographed the kits and parts, and will post them as
soon as our web master returns from his holidays. An announcement will be
made when the photos are actually posted.

They will be posted at:

        http://www.totalimmersion.com/silver6.html

Additional information will be posted over the week end on the DMC
Bulletin board at Total immersion.com. (my guess is Sunday).

All pre paid reservation holders will begin receiving confirmation e-mail
(private) as their kits are prepared for shipment.

One man's opinion:

The club is dead!  That's too bad because I had high hopes for an
alternative to the  DeLorean Owners Association.  I think it died for a
couple of reasons.  While the two gentlemen who were the primary forces
behind the proposed club are nice people (I know them both), they were not
the right people to get something of this magnitude off the ground without
substantial help.    And, like the DOA, they didn't want anyone else's
input on matters that matter.

Wow!  I just had my first VENT of the new year.

Dick Ryan

PS  In defense of both the new AND the old club, when it comes to help,
many offer but few follow through.  As for the money, after you go through
the legal fees to get all the right paper work done to be a non-profit
entity, set up even a rudimentary web page,  do a short run printing of
even a small magazine or newsletter, I doubt that you would have much left
over from the dues of approximately 100 members.  Remember, also, the the
good old DOA threatened legal action on a couple of points.  Attorney's
fees to even have those threats examined cost money.

I wish this hadn't ended this way, but I suspect it has truly ended.

Fellow DML'ers,

I experienced my finest moment with good ole 5705 last night!  After three
intense days of work, I can say at this moment that there doesn't appear
to be
anything major wrong with it anymore.  We fixed the passenger side
torsion bar
that had snapped in two, the louvre that had also snapped in two, (not
related), the horn that once sounded like Fran Dreshler, the door ajar
light
that was perpetually ON, and then took it for a spin.  It has a single
turbo
on it, that was repaired about a month ago, and LORD HAVE MERCY!!!

Some of you know how bummed I was for a while, but let me offer this as a
bit
of advice:  There is no better feeling than to see this fine automobile
perform at its best.  Don't let the frustrations of the quirks slow you
down,
because what you will find is the journey is half of the fun of getting
there,
you just don't always realize it at the time.  I even had a man pull up
while
we were at the filling station, and ask if he could take a picture of the
car.
That really capped off the satisfaction!

Hope everyone had a happy new year!

From: Ben Krasnow <kraz@xxxxxxx>
Subject: Re: DML: A few problems...

I am experiencing the same exact symptoms, and I'm sure my problem is
the accumulator as well.  There are a few possible causes for a loss of
fuel pressure when the engine (and fuel pump) are not running.  First,
to diagnose this, I bought a 100-pound gauge and some 1/4" pipe and hose
barb fittings.  I put the gauge in line with a tee just before the main
fuel supply line gets to the fuel distributer.  After shutting off the
car, I could see pressure drops to zero in a few seconds.  On a hot
engine, this causes gas vapor to build up in the lines, and will make
starting very hard. By clamping the fuel hose off, between the gauge and
the fuel distributer, I could see my problem had to be with the fuel
pump check valve or the accumulator (the pressure still droped like a
rock).  Since the fuel pump is new, I doubt the check valve is the
problem.  On Volvo cars the accumulator vent is open to the air, so if
the diaphram breaks, gas will just spill out onto the road.  On the
DeLorean, the vent is connected to the fuel return line to the tank.  By
clamping this line, I could see pressure did not drop as it did before.
So it has to be the accumulator, I think it's aorund $130.  If you get
stuck somewhere, here is a fail-safe quick fix, for a loss of fuel
pressure:  Connect the female grey plug on the  control pressure
regulator (small box with two fuel lines at rear or left valve cover) to
the male blue plug on the start injector (tall device in middle of left
valve cover, one fuel line, you will have to remove it's existing blue
plug).  Once you get it started, put the connectors back properly.   I
hope this helps, let me know if you find a good source for those
accumulators!

The throttle cable can stick for three different reasons: 1. A frayed
inner cable. 2. Rust and dirt build up of the outer cable. 3. Corrosion on
the outer cable due to arching cause be a ground fault of the electrical
system. Solution: Purchase a new inner cable, when pulling out the old
cable inspect it, especially at the point where it enters and exits the
outer cable. If any of the strands are broken or deformed you may only
need
to replace the inner cable, if there are signs of rust or corrosion
replace

Hi everyone:
I have already espoused the virtues of my DeLorean mechanic and how he
checks stuff before it happens... The frozen throttle problem was
another of the quirks that he routinely checks and corrects when he
works on DeLoreans. It is my understanding that they somehow shoot
antifreeze inside the throttle cable, seal it back up so that it doesn't
have to be done again and that takes care of the problem. In checking
with him, he told me that most of the DeLoreans he has worked on had
already had it done somewhere along the line, so Mr. Watkins may own one
that was missed. Happy New Year everyone! De Miller, Kansas City, VIN

Subject: DML: Dash pads (was Re: Interior Parts)

I bought a dash pad two years ago from PJ Grady on a
bit of a whim (I wasn't ready to do the swap yet)
to replace my cracked dash.  At the time, the pads were
running around $345.00.  I'm glad I did.  The last time I
checked the DMC website, the pads were over $600.

The higher price brings another option into play.
A place called Just Dashes can strip and recover a
DeLorean dash in either grey or black for around the
same price.  Just Dashes can come very close to
matching the original grain, but not exactly.  They will
also punch the speaker opening holes in the original
pattern.  If I was in the market for a pad today, I would
go with Just Dashes, mainly because the material would
be new.  Even with a new OEM pad, I had to have it dyed
black to cover some discolorations that had formed
over the years.

Just Dashes can be reached at 1-800-247-3274.

Scott,

I will contact Simon and post information regarding the system to my web
page and the DML.

NB the "headers" alone give only 15bhp, the other mods as described in
Simon's document are necessary to get the 167bhp described.

AFAIK, the headers exactly replace the existing manifolds right up to the
silencer. I don't know about the O2 sensor... I don't own a D... yet!

Best Wishes,

Martin

What is the "New Car" you are referring to in this quote?  I can't
believe 74
year old John De Lorean has built another car...  Who in the world would
finance such a project?  John De Lorean surely can't afford it, last I
heard
Merril Lynch was foreclosing on his New Jersey estate?  So what is the
car you
mention?  New?  Or was it an old quote?

I've only seen the pictures in DW of the top of the engine, and the
mock-up
which is on the cover of one of the issues. When I locate the article,
I'll post
the issue number (I wouldn't like to try reproducing the pictures for
copyright
reasons!). The intercoolers reside to the back of the engine compartment
on
either side (remember, no air box). I assumed some piping exists to
channel aur
up from beneath the car. I also assume the actual air intakes are under
the car,
but this is just speculation. Steve Wynne's the guy to ask.

Just for what it's worth:
I have a small die-cast Delorean model. It looks like a "Hot Wheels" car.
It is 2 3/4 in. long, painted silver and has a white plastic interior.
The doors open up. There is a gas flap on the hood, and louvers over the
engine.  The bottom says DE-LOREAN and then the number P374 and a symbol
that looks like a Z with a circle around it. I think I bought it at one
of the national rendezvous'  years ago. It's real cute and surprisingly
accurate in detail.

Squirt some antifreeze in the throttle cable and housing from the engine
side.
Just a little.
This will displace the water and unfreeze the cable.  It also helps to
lubricate the cable and the housing.  You should do this regularly with
alone
with your oil change.  This was taught to me by Rob From PJ Grady.

My cable snap when I was attending a meet in Philly, PA.  It snap about
several blocks from Mr. Ron Finelli's house where the meeting was held.
Mr.
Finelli was kind enough to take the cable out of his DeLorean and Rob
installed for me free of charge since his was hosting a DeLorean check at
the
meet.  This enable to get home back to New York City.

If you do feel binding then check the cable it may be fraying and ready to
brake, just like mine did.  I  was wondering why it was binding before it
broke.  I know now.

They were installed at the filter emission canister housing area in the
housing.  This is at the left side of the engine compartment.  The
cooling is
aided with the ram air from the air intake at the left side.  The ram
from the
right side is supposed to supplies the air filter?

Some DMC factory turbos had air scoops added on the back on both sides
with no
glass window.

Rob at PJ Grady has one on his premise that has factory air scoops.

Subject: DML: More ? on Frozen Throttle cable

List members (especially Joe who gave the tips below):

I have also experienced a simliar problem expalained below. I live in
Wisconsin and temps have been pretty chilly this week (and we're getting
nailed with snow storms right now) and while I was snowblowing my driveway
I thought it would be a good time to run my D for a little while and keep
its fluids going. Started fine but I cannot push down the gas pedal AT
ALL.
Shined a flash light in under the dash and the pedal moves freely. Then-
opened engine compartment and manually moved throttle control (I was lucky
to find it as I'm not very good with engines) and the engine revved as
normal. OK- so something has got to be frozen between the pedal and the
throttle control in back. What's really odd is that I run it every week
and
I just drove it last weekend- nothing else has changed with the car except
for the cold weather.

So my questions are these:
1. Is it REALLY necessary for me to start my D and run it for 10 minutes
every week? The previous owner said it was a good thing to do but what are
your opinions on this? Especially cold climate dwellers?
2. What can I do to unfreeze my throttle or is my D basically unmovable
until warmer weather arrives? What can I do to prevent this in the future?
I need to find at the very least a temporary fix for this so that I can
drive it to a mechanic (once it gets a little warmer). Do I need to
actively do anything or should I just let it thaw out by itself this
spring
and then have it looked at?

Any suggestions would be great and if nothing else to pass on the
suggestions to my mechanic. I really appreciate having a list like this-
unimaginably invaluable. I couldn't believe someone else was having frozen
throttle syndrome too! I await your suggestions- temporary fixes/solutions
etc!

Sincerely,
Jeff Wiltzius

Do their dash mats cover the top of the center console, I would prefer
that
since I've seen them both ways.

I have always wondered, how well does the DeLorean perform in snow and

I figure since it is a rear engine - rear wheel drive that it would do
very
well. I know that most of you put the D away for the winter, but if anyone
has any particular stories please share them..
