You can say that again. Just finding out what you can or can't do when a
legal problem arises can be very expensive. You don't even have to be
doing
something obviously wrong, just being in existence can be a problem once
any one wants to complain or start trouble. It's a shame that this can
happen, but happen it does.

Hi Jeff,

My vin is 5729 and all most every thing you have dealt with, are the same
problems I had with my D. You mentioned the horns........what did you
replace the OEM with? I hate mine and want to replace them but have no
idea
what to get.

Subject: DML: ok, here's an easy question...

I now know why my ventilation fans inside don't blow much air. The fan =
is a replacement piece (not installed by me) and it spins backwards. It =
will spin the right way if I swap the hot and ground wires on the fan =
itself. My question is, if I swap them, can this hurt my car in any way? =
Because, it would just be reversing the current flow and make the hot =
terminal a ground and the ground terminal the hot, right? I'm just =
concerned because there are so many ground wires going to the motor. =
Does anyone know if this will hurt my car? Thanks.

Marc (and DMC Joe),
        I agree with you on the front speakers being 3 1/2" speakers but I am
fairly sure the rear speakers are 4 X 10's (which makes them nearly
impossible to replace with a quality speaker because no one makes that
size
any more... WELL except Pioneer)

Several capable DML'ers offered the new DeLorean Motor Club a
"jump-start" in getting off the ground. They were ignored and later
smeared in correspondence from the DeLorean Motor Club "leadership". I,
too, was very sorry to see an alternative to the DOA fail. Not only
because competition is healthy, but because now Kjell and Robin have now
made it nearly impossible for another "alternative" club to be formed and
succeed.

The key is using the right tread and compound for tires. The D is very
clean

Dear DML,
        I drive my car all of the time.  I try not to drive the car when
there is snow and salt on the ground.  In an emergency I had to drive it
on an inch of snow and the car did not drive well at all.  Even though you
have the engine on the back the tires spin easily.  You must start out in
second gear. (I have a 5 speed)  since all the weight is on the rear
steering becomes very hard.  Skis would make steering 100% better but we
don't have that type of option.  I would recommend putting sand bags up
them in this @#$#@..  The salt will eat up the frames.  My two cents.

Back in 1982, a friend and myself drove the DeLorean up Mt. Hood outside
of
Portland during Thanksgiving.  While rounding a long sweeping corner, the
car spun 720 degrees and we slid of the road into a parking/scenic view
area.  I was lucky and did not cause any damage to my vehicle or to any
others.  The only damage was to my shorts, which were permenatley stained.

I hit a patch of ice and was probably going to fast for the road
conditions.
The DeLorean handles very well on smooth, dry roads.  But, as with any
other
car, you need to slow down when the conditions are not perfect.

Jeff, The "Deep South DeLorean Owners Club" is an informal group of
DeLorean
Owners and a couple of future owners.  We have no bylaws, no dues, ect..

fact, we may even change the name.

The club can be anything that you want it to be.  We plan to gather again

the Camellia Classic being held on April 3, 1999 in Mobile, AL

Driving in the snow?  Better get a horse and sled ;>)
DeLorean in the snow...............
I now going on three years of ownership of my DeLorean.
I have been driving it every day.  EVERYDAY!  From the hottest summer (100
degrees thru crawling city traffic), coldest and snow (except a major
blizzard).  The two best seasons for driving are spring and fall.

The DeLorean is rear engine so you will now feel the weight of the engine
"swing" forward when braking on the snow and puddle of water. 
The front is light and this does not help in either.

Driving in the snow is murder with any car, especially in a DeLorean.   It
will tax you and the vehicle's abilities.  Snow and rain mixed is SLUSH,
this
is the WORST.  Make sure you have good snow tires or good deep threads on
your
tires.  This is a problem with all vehicles especially "lighter" ones with
wide tires.  It just can't handle snow.  Tire's thread can't bit into the
snow
to get traction.

When driving in the snow make sure you are alone on a lane with NO one
around
you either on the left or right side with ample room in the front and
especially the rear.  Make room if you must, slow down or give way.  Do it
intelligently, don't create an accident in doing so.  If any out of
control
situation should happen you can react or have plenty of room to make all
your
corrections and adjustments to avoid any mishaps. 

One of my many encounters with snow is when I went from New York City to
Atlanta, Georgia on a business trip.  Going down to Atlanta was a cold
trip
with little snow flurries every so and then.  On the way back 3 days
later,
that was a major difference!

It start to snow heavy just as I got to the Virginia border and
Washington, DC
area.  Heavy snow flakes coming down. It is going to become a blizzard. 
I got
onto I-95 New Jersey Turnpike north bound heading home to New York City
and
there is at least 2 1/2 to 3 inches of snow and slush with more snow still
falling to make visibility worst. 

The SAFE top speed without slipping and slide was 45 to 50 mph with full
control.  Don't even try to push it and don't touch the brakes.  Momentum
is
now the game with the constant feed from the wheels.  If you hit the
throttle
the wheel spins for you but you are not going anywhere and you will "fish
tail."  You will lose control.  You will hydroplane-float and spin!!! 
Not a
good feeling.  Some people look at my DeLorean as they sped by and they
still
want to drive by faster.  They are annoyed or they have a "speed" fetish
- --
sick people!  They had a point to prove that their vehicle is now supreme
when
passing a "D".
There were accidents left and right because of drivers like them in the
snow.
These are signs of poor drivers in judgement and poor handler of their
cars.
Or they maybe unlucky? 

BTW I tried to even to create a situation WHERE THERE WAS NO ONE AROUND
to see
the behavior of my DeLorean.  No, I am not reckless.  I just want to see
how
the DeLorean behaves in the snow when fish tailing.  This story is for
another
time.

Now give me my 1957 Bentley for the snow.  Except for a sheet of ice, I
can
plow right through the same road with the snow with no problems.  I have
done
this in the pass 25 years.  No problems even at 60 mph for 2 inches of
snow
and up 70 mph for 3 inches of snow, and it is not a 4 X 4, it is close to
5,000 lbs in weight with me in it.  Just be cautious of ice under the
snow. 

The Delorean has no speed and no luxury on the snow or rain.
The DELOREAN IS A UNIQUE CAR IN ITS OWN WAY, the speed, the handling and
other
feelings are different then the Bentley or any other extoic cars for that
matter.   Drive your DeLorean or any vehicle in the snow safely and
cautiously.  Don't push it and watch out for all the Mario Andrews, the Al
Unsers (speed demons) and the "craziess" on the road.  They will do you
in,
not the snow.

If you must drive in the snow, slower is better.  Don't drive in the snow
is
the best.

Drive safely and enjoy.

Subject: DML: Matchbox Delorean Model

The small Matchbox sized Delorean is from a 1985 release called
"Pacesetters".  I have about 5 of them,  a few still in the original
packages.  They were made by a company called Intex Recreation Corp out of
Long Beach California.  It was a 30 car series,  and as you might guess
the
company did not want to sell "just" the Delorean car.  If you wanted to
order, you had to get a large order that was random in it's packing. 
There
was no way of knowing which cars you would get.  I tried in vain to get
them to sell me a bunch of the Deloreans.   I was lucky enough to have
found mine at a Los Angeles grocery store toy section.   I've yet to see
it
re-released.   If anyone on the list who lives near Long Beach wants to
find this place and drive up in their car and ask.........who knows???

You can temporary use the inertia switch to cut the fuel supply if you
are in
a situation where you feel the need for it.  Just pull the plunger
upwards on
the inertia switch to cut off fuel pump.  Before you start up the car
press,
the plunger downwards and hit the ignition.  There is no adverse effect
to the
car or fuel system.

No gas, no go, can't go anywhere!
 
If you want to make a more permanent solution, you can cut the wire that
supply the power to the fuel pump from the inertia switch.  Add a new
length
of wire and a toggle switch in series and route this switch to a place
somewhere that you can hide it from all others.  Placement is your
discretion.
This will shut all fuel to the engine.

Switch is less then $4.00 with wire and 30 mins. to install it. 

Problems?  You must remember to toggle the switch to off when you leave
the
car. This is not automatic and you must do EVERYTIME when there is the
need
for it.  When you are ready to start the car again?  Toggle to on.  Fuel
pump
with be operating again.

Don't want the switch?  Don't like the switch? Remove switch and wire,
reconnect the original wire.  No harm done.  Almost good as new.

You can fit up to 4" of speaker in the front.  Best for the money and
sound
quality in the 4" sizes are Polks or JBL.  Many other speakers sounds
"hard"
due the size and the installation area.  They are right in front of you
on the
dash.

The rear speakers are a pain to get at and to mount a good pair of
speakers.
They will sound unbalance in relation to the 4" in the front. 
Replace the original 4" X 10" with 6" X 9."

The problem that still exist is poor sound distribution.  Best thing to do
without the over kill, the expense and ability to return the DeLorean to
its
original looks with little ado, is to cut the back of the facial board
under
the rear window.  There is only about 4" to 5" X 12" approx. of cavity of
good
space to mount a speaker on each side.  This cavities is also important in
supporting the sound of the speaker you are mounting.  That is all the
room
you have.

Have a good sound.

I replaced mine with Hella's from Griot's Garage.  Yes, they are those
annoying screechy German sounding horns, but I don't toot them for music,
but to get attention.  They are much louder and they do get attention.
They are also very compact and fit into the area of the orignal horns very
nicely,.

I have driven my D in snow and on ice.  It's tricky.  Yes, you do have
more
traction with the weight in the rear, but the already light front end can
really come loose easily.  While we all talk about how little HP our cars
have, I find that the D spins the wheel much too easily on slippery snow
or
ice.

The other problem with the D in the winter, at least where I live, is that
it is much lower than the windrows of snow created by the plows.  Thus, at
intersections you need to be VERY careful becuase the other folks can't
see
you until they are right on you.  Scary!!

As a year round driver, I can tell you that the DeLorean does well on
snow and ice with the exception of taking corners.  You have to be
careful not to let the front end let go or you could be in big trouble. 
Also, good tires are critical.

Funny Story:

Shortly after I purchased my first DeLorean in 1990, we had about six
inches of snow.  Since I was a new DeLorean owner, I just had to drive my
DeLorean in the snow without paying any attention to the bald rear tires.
 I took a turn a little too fast and found the rear of the car passing me
on a four lane road sliding down hill.  As the DeLorean spun round and
round while sliding down this hill and crossing all lanes of traffic, I
remember thinking that the other drivers of the road must have been
saying, "Here's something you don't see everyday!".

Anyway, I still don't know how I managed not to hit anyone or have anyone
hit me.  Once the car came to rest, I drove straight home and waited for
the roads to be cleared before going for new tires.

Short of paint remover and sand paper which will not leave the Stainless
Steel looking Factory,  The only solution I could think of is to remove
all
your Stainless Steel panels and send them to someone who can dip the
entire
part for stripping.  Some people who come to mind:

1) Furniture strippers, some of these people have tanks big enough for
entire tables.
2) Industrial painters, particularly the people who paint bridge parts.
They in turn
    sometimes have to remove a bad paint job.
3) Platers, these people sometimes have to dip entire parts for aircraft
landing for
    stripping and cleaning.

This is a tough task, get your hands on a recent edition of the "Thomas
Register" and look for strippers in there close to you vicinity.  The
"Thomas Regional Director" is a good starting point also.

If you've done this already then the fan motor is not grounded at all, so
the
only rick you will have is if something of ground potential touches the
outer
housing of the fan motor, then you will have a short circuit and blow the
fuse.  Also these motor are available and not to expensive, maybe you

just replace it with the correct motor.

If I understand correctly there were three different hoods that evolved
over the 3 years.  The first had some nicer lines than the latter hoods
but required opening the trunk in order the fill the gas tank, right? 
The second was a straight hood but didn't require the lifting of the
trunk.  The final actually had "De Lorean" logo towards the front
drivers side headlight.  Am I correct in these statements?  Did I miss
any details especially regarding the third hood?  Also does anybody know
at what point these changes took place?  Does anybody know the beginning
and ending vin # for these changes?  Thanks for all the info.

Much harder ! The double latch, lock, and release set up is very complex
making it almost impossible to open the gullwing doors without a key. If a
thief wants to get into a DeLorean he will need to smash a window.

CORRECTION,
Sorry for the misinformation, the rear speakers are 4X10 not 6X9 as I
stated. BTW if you are considering replacing those speakers, forget it!
They are not baffle mounted, therefore no matter what speaker you install
you will only have minimum bass response. A much better choice providing
better sound and easier installation is placing speakers in the panel just
below the rear window. See Kayo Ong's post from yesterday for detials.

Mike,

Yes it does cover the top of the center console.  It takes
about 3-5 days for it to conform to the dash but it is cut perfectly.  It
also doesn't cover up your defroster vents at the top of the dash.  I
wedged
mine in at the top of the dash and into the side pillars so I didn't have
to
use the Velcro.  I am very happy with mine.
