I'm currently considering purchasing a DeLorean and have a couple
questions
about cars with low mileage.
For car with < 5000 miles, does it make sense to perform the popular
updates
such as cooling system, coolant tank, alternator, battery, etc..? Or does
the fact the current parts have low hours make it less necessary to
replace?
If a low mileage car hasn't been started for 2+ years (sitting in garage),
should I be concerned about engine problems that are a result of the
engine
not having been run on a regular basis? When does fuel contamination
become
an issue?
What sort of cost would I be looking at to replace the door struts on a
DeLorean?
I've read everything I could find on the web about DeLorean maintenance,
but
couldn't find answers to these questions. Thanks for any information you
can provide.

There really is no set price for something like this. It really depends
on
what it would be used for and if it is an integral part of the event (ie:
Back to the
future party etc.). I'm An Entertainment Production Manager at Walt
Disney World for
Conventions & Special Events at Epcot, and in the past I have used
vehicles for our
Events such as parades, enterances & Exits or reveals. Depending on
whether we need Many
vehicles or just one, dictates the amount that we would spend. Generally
speaking if I
subcontract someone with there vehicle for use in an event, I would be
looking at spending
$200 to $500 depending on how long they would be needed.

Interesting thread. I work for a Goodyear dealer, and we go through a
ton
of GT II's, receiving only positive comments. Joe, why do you not
recommend the tire? I agree, it's not exactly an ultra-high performance
tire, but it is pretty solid all-around with exceptional wear. With a T
rating, it'll safely handle those higher speeds.(up to 118mph) Then
again,
maybe I'm bias. It's hard to find a set of 4 in the proper size these
days. It was also said that Goodyear was not the choice from day one,
but
NCT's were stock.
I also have a Delorean mention. I saw the Wedding Singer again, and the
Delorean makes a 10 sec appearance. The rich groom of one of the main
characters (Drew Barrymore) was driving one. It's a pretty funny movie
set
in 1985. Also, if you're looking for a little mood music for your D',
check out the Soundtracks Vol. 1 and 2.

The 97=99 DeLorean was at both the Challenge of Champions and World of
Wheels in Chicago at the end of January. The car drew large crowds and
had TV coverage on 5 Channels (one WGN had the smoke coming out of the
rear end.) It won first place in its class at both shows.
There were lots of questions about the availability and prices of
DeLoreans. There still are people who will buy this car.
Dyno testing of this car is scheduled for Jan 13, 1999. We might even
bring a stock DeLorean to run a side by side comparison. Results will
be published.=20

That depends on you. There are a few safety and electrical upgrades
that you should definitely have, but "upgrade" items can usually wait.
I still have my plastic coolant bottle, and drive my car about 2K miles
a year with no problems. (Now that I said that, I am sure it will
crack!)

YES! Do not start a car that has been stored improperly until the fuel
system has been cleaned out. Doing so can cause expensive damage!

other than the crack on the dash. Perfect stainless body, runs
perfect, used every weekend.
I am selling so that I may buy a white 5-speed DeLorean. I will
consider a trade.
I am looking for a white (will consider other color), 5-speed, any year,
under 50K miles, would like twin turbo but not needed, must not have
radio antena on front fender. I may trade for a stainless DeLorean, but
it must be 5-speed.

Yes. I know that cost is usually an issue and that some of these
'updates'
may be costly, but eventually these items give out so you might as well go
ahead and replace them now. Especially the stock alternator.

You would definitely want to flush out the fuel system before attempting
to
start the car. This seems to be the biggest problems with DeLoreans that
sit for a period of time.

They usually cost around $65 to $70 from the usual parts suppliers. You

Jeff, funny you should ask about the Goodyear GT II. I just ordered some
Monday and I'm going to put them on tomorrow (2/6/99). There is another
Delorean owner in Nashville that has these tires. He has no complaints.
Also I
got the tires for $335.72. About Memphis in May, I've been a few times
and had
a blast! I'm also a barbecue freak. My "D" hasn't moved in about 10
years. I
just recently took possession of the car from my dad. I'm going this
weekend
to start on a long project, I've been very lucky to have fellow "D"
owners in
Nashville help me out in a big way. The car is going to DMC Joe around
the end
of this month for some major work, but should be as Willie Nelson would
say
"on the road again" soon. Hopefully by the begining of May the car will be
ready. I would bet money that the other Delorean owners in Nashville would
love to go. They're just a crazy (if not more) about these cars than I am.

available sets of performance camshafts for Ds. I have just finished a
set of cylinder heads that have had the exhaust ports enlarged,
radiused, and polished. Before I install the heads, I would like to add
a little bit of lift to the exhaust geometry. Any ideas?

Hi Jason The Hocky mask Tobias,
As I posted recently, I have the Good year tires in the correct size and
the correct tread pattern, and inflated per mfg/De Lorean specifications.
I
could not disagree with joe more. I have run my tires way over rated
speed,
and on dirt, cement, asphalt and even beach sand doing a Thomas Crown
impression!
I found no problems with the tire, it is a great and quite affordable all
round tire. I really dislike flip reply that dismiss DML members who do
their best to offer one another their best and usually honest thoughts and
information on parts and other De Lorean related information.
I love driving in the Northern Californian wine countries winding two
lane
black top roads. My favorite game is passing a 911 and leading them on a
marry chase to the next watering hole. Many have had the expensive V rated
rubber, but they still ended up 2nd. I am no Yance Tsuchiama by any
stretch, that aside I have yet to have either front or back end break away
on a tight wet turn at 50MPH running Goodyears.
If the Goodyear NTC was the OEM tire of choice, I find flippantly passing
off the brand less than reasonable.

Two items of interest.
1. The promotional brochure of The Yankee Candle Car Museum of South
Deerfield, Massachusetts, pictures a 1981 De Lorean on the front
fold
along with a 1951 Jaguar XK 120 and a 1963 Amphicar. Good company.
The museum houses an 80 car showroom. Cars change regularly.
Call ahead to determine if the De Lorean is on exhibit,
413-665-2020.
2. Giorgetto Giugiaro is the famous industrial designer from
Italdesign who designed the De Lorean. Next to John De Lorean, his
name is one of the personages who is most frequently associated with
the De Lorean. In the February, 1999, issue of Madison magazine,
you
will find a cameo article on the life of Giorgetto Giugiaro. You
will
learn that his design career extended well beyond automobiles.
While we are on the subject of Giugiaro, does anyone have for sale
the
Giugiaro plate that was affixed on 1982 models of the De Lorean???
Can anyone send me a photocopy of that plate??????
Remember, Eastern Regional Run 9 will occur on May 21-23, 1999, at
the
Inn of the Six Mountains, Killington, Vermont. A full weekend of

Thanks to everyone for all of the positive feedback. Here is my next =
project. I've noticed alot of people having problems with the engine =
compartment light and I was able to replace mine while still using the =
existing housing. However, as all owners know, the light isn't =
sufficent enough to see everything (anything!) at night. A while back, =
I owned a '82 280ZX and its engine compartment light would detach and =
had enough wire to reach anywhere in the engine compartment. I figured =
this would be a good idea for the DeLorean in case ya ever forget your =
flashlight. If anyone is interested please let me know.

Hi All...
I work around the corner from the Los Gatos Auto Mall in Los Gatos, CA
which has the 1981 D mentioned earlier so I went by at lunch and checked
it
out.
It is an October 81 build, VIN # 05480. The odometer reads 5,884.8 It's
a
5 speed, grey interior, has lines in hood but no gas flap. The antenna is
in the rear, but it looks like the power antenna was replaced with a non
retracting black mast. The car has the LCD clock next to the dash light
dimmer and has a Pioneer CD player in place of the original radio. The
dealer wasn't sure if they had the original deck or not.
Overall, the car is very clean and runs great. No scratches or dents in
the stainless, although there was some sort of blemish on the driver's
rear
fender.
Based on my limited experience, I'd say this car is a good deal at the
$16,900 they are asking. Especially based on the area it is in...
everything's over priced around here.
The DeLorean is still being detailed so it is not out on the lot yet, but
will be in a day or two. If you're interested, call LG Auto Mall at (408)

Does anybody know how one goes about removing the black plastic faschia
pieces
on the rear quarter panels (the one between the rear and door window
glass)?
I searched the backissues to no avail... I could just mask off the areas
around and paint them on car, but I don't want paint to get in back of the
pieces.
Also, the back of my engine cover is cracked, presumably from somebody
trying
to force the cover down with the latch in place. I was thinking about
epoxying
the crack, and epoxying a 1-1.5 foot thin metal bar along the inside of
the
cover (painted black, of course) to offer additional support. Are there
any
better recommended repairs for this? The crack is in the middle of the
cover,
below the latch thingy, and only the bottom lip of the cover is cracked.
Along the questions of performance, has anybody installed a lighter
flywheel
in a 5-speed? I found a company on the web that sells them. There

I gave it some thought when I installed the centerforce clutch but with
the
PRV engine being an odd firing engine, the inherent unbalance might become
worse with a lighter flywheel.

These were aftermarket. No DeLoreans came from the factory with them. Don
Steger at the DeLorean Motor Center in Garden Grove, Ca. used to carry
them.

Doug,
If you come on this list and ask: Should I buy stuff for my
Delorean the answer is going to be a resounding *YES* from
many corners. Keep in mind there are people here selling
things and also promoting their favorite D parts sources
and mechanics.
I'm also a newcomer here - just bought an '81 D with almost
all of it's original parts - and my opinion is: if it ain't broke,
and you're not rich, don't fix it!
(though there are some things you might want to
check like your trailing arm bolts). And if it 'is' broke, there
are several different sources through which you can get
replacements. Don't believe anyone here who tries to convince
you that only one person (in New Jersey) has it for a fair price.

The reason I said that the Goodyear's were not recommended is due to the
fact that until recently most of their tires did not perform well compared
to some other brands. The original NCT's were terrible. Recently I have
heard some positive comments, so maybe the newer models are improved. My
"D" has over 250K miles and over the years it has been fitted with several
brands and types. As you know there are very few choices left so it's good
to hear that the Goodyear's are a good alternative.

"Simon Lees-Milne of the DeLorean Owners Club UK had his car modified for
greater performance, conforming to "what would have been" the Euro-spec
DeLorean. We discussed what he'd had done before, but I was not in
possession of all the facts at the time, and hope to redress the balance
now.
The reason I have this information is that I am now officially the club
Internet correspondent, and Simon asked if I'd forward any interesting
information available on the Internet. Well, I looked through my trash
folder and recovered the dmcnews digests back to no. 339, sent them to
Simon, and he rang me to let me know of the detail on his car, which I
posted information about a while back, but did not tell the whole story.
Simon's car (an auto) officially produces 167bhp @ 5600rpm in the rear
wheels. This is with the following modifications:
1) Fitting of a free flowing exhaust comprising 3 separate manifolds on
each side and combined into one 2" pipe, in turn pushing through a
transverse free-flowing muffler (that only just comes within UK noise
specs!).
2) No Catalytic converter or Lambda sensor
3) No air flow damper box
4) Adjustment of the fuel flow through the injector regulator, speeding
it up such that he now gets an 85% through flow (15% returned to tank) as
opposed to the 60% stock.
There are now about 12 "British" D's with this conversion, and all easily
red-line.

The quarter panel must be completely removed in order to remove the black
fiberglass louver. If you just need to refinish it do what we do, just
mask
the adjoining stainless and spray with two coats of Krylon Semi-Flat
Black.
Don't worry about getting over spray behind the vent, there is nothing
there to hurt.
To correct your cracked rear louver you can purchase a reinforcement brace
from one of the DeLorean parts suppliers.
Do not substitute any flywheel other than the factory unit.

I currently have the Yokohama AVS tires on my DeLorean and can honestly
say that they are fantastic. I took my original NCT's off and replaced
them with the Yoko's. When the NCT's were new, I was unable to break
them loose while cornering on dry pavement. The original NCT's handeled
very well, remember, this was in 1981 when they were brand new.
I bought the Yoko's based on the comments that I read in this newsletter.
I am glad that there is an alternate tire available, in fact, Duke runs
Road Huggers and has told me that he is pleased with them. Goodyear,
Yokohama or whatever, if it means that you are out driving your car, then
you bought the best tire.
I like my Yokohama's, but I may try something else when the Yoko's are no
longer servicable.
As far as having Z rated tires, I prefer getting long tread life to being
able to drive at 150 MPH. Be realistic about this, where can you drive
the car that fast, and not then only be able to share the story with the
judge or your cellmate. ;-)

Hello all...
I did try searching the archives for this but there were so many matches I
couldn't find one that seemd appropriate to my problem.
I have a leak at the top of my passenger side door. The water comes in at
the far right side just in front of the sun visor. I thought I could fix
this by replacing the door seals (with new ones from P.J. Grady) but no
such luck. Any suggestions on how to track down and fix this problem?

I had somthing similar to this happen to me once. It was just after I had
the head liners replaced. What it ended up being was the head liner
fabric
was slightly outside the seal and would "sponge" any water that it could.
As it absorbed the water, the water would travel under the seal (by way of
the head liner) and disperse on the other side - in the passenger's lap.
I
ended up simply cutting the excess material away and everything was back
to
neat!

I've come into the possesion of a DMC license plate that I've only seen
on the photos of the late prototype cars. It's made of white card stock
that has been printed in black and silver. There's a perf cut along the
bottom, indicating that it must have been attached to something else at
one time. Does anyone know any more about the history of this item? It
can be seen on the cars in the tri-fold brochures, the big showroom
brochures, and in SSI on pages 97 and 119. I have a picture ofit posted
on my web site under 'Special Documents'(see URL in my SIG). Any ideas??
The only reply I got was from one person who wanted to buy it (and no,
it's not for sale). So the question still stands. Does anyone know any
of the history of this item?
