I think the 91 in the manual refers to 91 in British gas,
which is different than U.S.
I have always run mine on 87 w/o any problems.

MOST cars have 1-5 as you state. Reverse is still car-specific in europe, and the
DeLorean's is to the left of 2, and requires the shifter to be lifted to slot it into
reverse.

The US spec production speedo goes to 85. The BTTF car's was doctored to go to 95. The
Euro-spec cars have 140mph speedos and someone reproduced them in a small number with
some slight modifications. The 170mph speedo is/was an aftermarket option from some
DeLorean vendors. The Canadian spec cars have 240kph speedos.

My 1981 Owner's Manual states: "Your De Lorean is designed to operate at
factory specifications on UNLEADED GASOLINE only of at least 87 anti-knock
index (R+M/2) (91 research octane number)."
Here in the US the octane noted on the gas pump is R+M/2 or "anti-knock
index". So, 87 octane is fine for these cars unless you've modified the
motor for more horsepower. With a stock engine stay with the 87 unless you
get pinging. Too high of octane means that the fuel may not burn completely
and it could leave deposits in the engine.

Hi,
AAA insurance will probably be the best for insuring your DeLorean. I
have my car under my moms name just to make it cheaper. It has full coverage
and unlimited mileage and is WELL under $1000/year. You will need to have
another Daily driver insured through AAA or another company to keep the rates
down.
I called GEICO and they said it would be $4200/year in my mothers
name(perfect record, 43 old) Progressive was $1800/year. I'd call AAA first.

First of all, permit me to introduce myself, my name is Chris, I'm 22
years old and I'm a computer technician by trade.
I do appreciate the input given. I have a few more questions, I did
read that the doors can lock on you if not unlocked properly, with
the door closed and the problem is due to the lock solenoids. I know
that there is a fix for this, is this something one can do themselves?
Second question; I've found most parts for the DeLorean through the
various parts vendors, one thing I cannot find is a windshield,
should it need to be replaced, has anyone had to replace their
windshield and if so, where does one get it?
Third question; Since I live in a rural part of Virginia, and as
such, to get certain services, one has to go to Winchester or deeper
into the Washington DC area, since in my case taking it for repairs
and maintenance that I cannot handle to one the specialty shops such
as PJ Grady, DMC-Houston or DeLorean One, is not feasible. Are there
options in my case? Such as mechanics in either the Winchester or
Washington DC areas who know the DeLorean well?

Hi
It is true that the manual states to use 91 octane fuel. But you have to
remember one thing - it was written in British english! They also tell you
to check your TYRES ;). There is a different system used in Europe to
determine the octane rating. Europe uses the research method, while US uses
R+M/2 formula.
To make things simple - 91 octane in Europe is exactly the same as 87 in US.
Use 87 if you are in US and Canada. Use 91 if you are in Europe.
I hope this clears up the confusion.

Regular unleaded is 95 over here, super is 98 and Shell recently brought out Optimax
which is 99.

It is my belief that recommendations such as this are
a bit of an over simplification. I suggest one use
that grade which gives (or seems to give) the best
performance, or even comfort level.
A number of factors can influence that decision. Do
you drive "hard"? At what altitude do you do most of
your driving (we don't all live at sea level). Has
the car been modified in any way? ETC., ETc.!!
Use the grade that gives you the performance you want
and listen carefully for detonation. If you
experience pre-ignition, move up a grade and make sure
your car is properly tuned.

Hey Chris,
I got my windshield from PJ. Grady. I would recommend him putting it in.
Take a nice trip or get it towed up there and take a tour of his shop. You
can use the shipping charges you saved on to apply to your installation
charge. This was recommended to me. I was thinking, what if I get the
windshield shipped to me and then my installer cracks it? It doesn't cost
that much to have it installed and PJ Grady might fix other annoying
problems you might have or simply take a look over the car. Give him a call
or check out his website.

My name is Mike in Baltimore. I have had my Delorean for about 6 months and
have met a member on the list who has helped me eith basif fuel ignition
repiars. There is a mecahnic in Rockville, MD (which is just north of D.C.) I
had to convince my wife (and 3 little kiddies) that repairs were not a big
deal and help is only a phone call or the internet away....Any part you need
for this car can be bought for a price and most so far for me have been
reasonable...
