Subject: Delorean Maintenance?
Hi, I'm looking to buy a used Delorean, but my friend says if I get
one it will break down a lot and it will cost me a lot of money to
fix and it requires constant maintenance. I want to ask Delorean
owners if this is true. Do Deloreans usually break down or have
something go wrong often?

Subject: auto tranny problem
Hi Group,
Theres a DeLorean being auctioned here in
Sydney which I'm intrested in.When I went out for a
spin in it on the weekend it seems the transmission
wouldn't downshift to first gear, but after about 15
mins when the car had warmed up the problem seemed to
go away.Is this likely a computer governer issue or
something else?Please forgive my ignorance,but I don't
know much about automatic transmissions.

Went home last night and checked for water in the spark plug wells. Sure
enough cylinder number 6 was about 1/3 full of water. Cleaned it out and
it
runs great!

A well-maintained DeLorean is very reliable. But, like any 20+ year old
car, a poorly
maintained DeLorean could be prone to problems.
I took mine on two fairly long trips last year, from Cleveland to London,
Ontario and
from Cleveland to Evansville, Indianna. I was not worried about my
DeLorean having any
mechanical trouble, and it did perform perfectly on those long trips and
on the many
short trips I took last year.

I have not found that DeLorean repairs cost more than other car repairs.
In fact, in the
past three years my 1992 Pontiac Trans Sport has cost more in parts and
labor than my
DeLorean. I put about the same miles on both every year.
I am confused about your reference to "constant maintenance." If you are
looking for a
maintenance free car, forget it. Every car requires maintenance, and 20
year old cars
require more of it than new cars. But one nice advantage of the DeLorean
is that is has
a very low maintenance body.

It sounds to me like you need to do some homework. Read the DML
for a while, get to know some owners in your area, go to some
DeLorean meets, and then see if a DeLorean is really for you. A
DeLorean CAN be an unreliable car if you buy the WRONG ONE. Some
general advice is to steer clear of extremely low mileage
completely original cars which have been sitting. Those will
absolutely bleed you dry. We are talking you can drop
$10,000-$15,000 into one of those pretty quickly. There are also
factory recalls, and updates which are also essential to having
a safe, reliable DeLorean. Those deal with the cooling,
electrical, and fuel systems. A lot of people also feel that you
should steer clear of the really early and really late cars, and
that 5-speeds are more reliable than the automatics... but those
points are still debated. The bottom line is that DeLoreans are
now 20+ years old, and will require some TLC, money, and time in
the shop. On the upside, you can't find a cooler car with more
personality :).

I took my D to a garage yesterday to find out where my all my anti freeze

leaking from. While it was in the shop i asked them to diagnois why she
was
idling so high. There answer today is, that my spark plugs are arcing and
my fuel injection needs to be purged? What does fuel injection needs to
be
purged mean?

I am pretty sure this is a computer/governor problem. My car does the same
thing. It can be combated by starting the car out with the gear selector
in
a lower setting other than Drive. If I start the car out with the lever in
2nd (or 1st), it usually signals it and it actually will shift to 1st. But
if your gov is bad, it will get worse and eventually will be an extreme
pain
to drive. I am dealing with this now. I have stopped driving it until I
install my new gov!
There is some good info on the DMCnews tech info pages about this.
