Subject: Re: Storing my car for the first time

Storing a car raises a lot of personal biases. The main things are how
long and how much work to "unstore". The longer the storage period the
more you should do. Unfortunatly I have seen the results of too many
cars that were only to be stored for the winter and wind up not being
touched for 20 years. The more you can do the easier and better shape
it will come out of storage. Some of the minimum things are

Clean the car inside and out and remove anything that doesn't belong
in it.

Remove and store the battery separatly charging it regularly.

Best if stored in a heated garage but doesn't have to be heated but
make sure little critters can't get near the car to live in it.

Remove the fuel or at least most of it to get it off the fuel pump
boot and pick-up hose.

Lift the car and place on jackstands.

Treat the leather with a preservitive to keep it from drying out.

Put thick blankets on the car so if anything should fall on or against
it it shouldn't get damaged.

Make sure it is properly insured during storage.

There are many other things that can be done like changing fluids,
fogging the motor with oil, removing and storing the tires separatly,
it becomes a matter of personal issues but remember the longer it is
stored the more to do. In general if it is only put away for 6 months
or less you really don't have to do anything but the battery.

No.  I think you are measuring a trickle current through the door lock
module.  A slight drain through this circuit is normal whether you are using
the OEM module or the LockZilla module.  Try unplugging the module's heavy
red wire (the power lead) to see if this stops the current draw.

Other things to consider:

A bad diode inside your alternator can be draining your battery.

If the total 'trickle' drain from your battery is less than around 60mA,
then don't worry about it.

Your problem may be intermittent.  That is why battery cut-off switches are
so popular on these cars.  My car even came with one from the previous
owner.  My door switches were intermittent.  They had no rubber caps.  If
you want to try installing caps on yours to see if that helps, just use
small vacuum line caps from the "Help (tm)" section of most autoparts
stores.  That is all they are.  This didn't work well enough for mine, so I
experimented with using pieces of vacuum hose.  Since the end was open, this
allowed it to slide down too far.  Then I plugged the end of the hose, but
it was too long and folded by door switch.  (My motto, if it jams, force it.
If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway).  Which brings another point...
read the archives about Dave Sonto's solid state proximity door switch
replacement.  I put those on my car, and now I have no more door switch
problems.  They draw far less current than a car stereo memory, and work
perfectly.  If the proximity switches weren't an option, I certainly
wouldn't waste my money on a reproduction of the old switch.  I would look
at installing mercury tilt switches in the doors, but that would involve
running more wire.

[Moderator Note: Further "Code of the Highway" posts will be REJECTED, unless they have specific bearing on DeLorean technology (horn & headlight controls, etc).]

I dont know if its changed, but the Highway Code used to say that a short
flash of headlights only says 'Im here' - but I agree it's generally taken
as meaning 'I can tell what you are going to do next and it's fine by me'
-trouble is, if the other person hesitates (or perhaps decides whihc of two
opions they will follow) its followed by 'oh sod you then'...and the gas
pedel...

:)

As for horns (and Im nearly off topic now but bear with me) a short horn blast
tends to mean 'You dope look what you did' but a long one
means 'Ok ok so you havent taken a big risk here but my car should really be
allowed to use your bit of road right now because thats the kind of day Im
having...'

But DML drivers wouldn't do either cos in the latter situation they dont have
anything to prove, and in the former they are too scared of bending their
stainless... :))

I think everyone needs to chill out for a few moments and take a deep
breath... and learn the difference between copyrights and trademarks.
Copyrights are given for expressions of ideas in a medium (like stories,
songs, art, etc).  Trademarks are protected logos (actual images) and/or
owned/non ordinary words - true trademarks like the word "Pepsi".   Both are
intellectual property, but the rules concerning each are different.  DMC
Houston can trademark the phrase "DELOREAN MOTOR COMPANY" and "DMC" (text,
that is), but they can't be copyrighted, since they are not actual
expressions of ideas - the *are* trade names used in commerce.  The graphic
image of "DMC" can be copyrighted and trademarked.   DMC Houston can also
copyright their new magazine, their website, and documentation they produce,
etc, so people can't copy the intellectual content.  As my last email
stated, DMC Houston holds a trademark ONLY ON THE STYLIZED "DMC" logo, and
only for two classes.  I pretty sure DMC can't claim a copyright on the
"DMC" logo or anything and everything that says "DMC", since (a) they didn't
create (i.e. express) it originally, (b) I can find no official registration
of a copyright for the logo, and (c) DMC Houston does not specify that the
image is actually copyrighted.  So, please, before everyone goes flying off
the handle - get your facts straight, understand exactly what DMC Houston
has rights to protect and then move forward.

Lee stated:

>The bottom line is that it's entirely DMC Houston's game, they can enforce
or not as they choose, with >any outcome being either an out of court
settlement or court finding after a trial.
and
>This is true of all others as well who are selling
>anything that DMC Houston might decide to claim is theirs,

Again, this is only true for the two classes under which they have
registered the DMC logo.  I don't know DMC Houston very well, and I've only
met James at Cleveland, so I don't know if DMC Houston is attempting to
claim rights to everything "DMC" or not, based on two trademarks.  Facts,
rather than hearsay, would be nice.

I am not a lawyer, so if there are any lawyers that want to correct my
understanding, please feel free. Having been through this for my website,
this is my understanding.

[Eric and anyone else in this business: The DMC News website has sections for classified ads as well as links to vendors.  Feel free to make use of them.    - Mike Substelny]

Hello,
My dad and I do Delorean hauling on the side.  We live in Michigan
and are interested in helping out people who live in the general
area.  Meaning, no California trips or Florida trips.  Right now my
dad is picking up a Delorean for someone who lives in Chicago, and
the delorean is located in Missouri.  We have a flatbed trailer that
is specially rigged for Deloreans.  We haul our Delorean on it all
the time, and have other Delorean on it too for people.  Our rates
are competative with professional haulers.  I guess our only sales
pitch is we love Deloreans.  We care for them, and know how to treat
them.  They are not just another car on the trailer to us.  We take
great care in hauling them.  If anyone is interested, you can contact
me at delorean502(at)excite.com or 616-836-9225.

THanks

Subject: Starting Problems

I have been having some starting/engine firing problems.  I know that various things have been written in the past about different causes, but any insights would be appreciated before the car heads back to my mechanic.

About two months ago, I started having problems as I attempted to start the car.  The engine would turn over and over but it would not fire.  This only happened a few times, and eventually it started.  A few weeks ago, I could not get it to start at all.  My mechanic, while checking the likely causes, performed the “quick fix” (from DeLorean MidAtlantic) for a bad accumulator but nothing seemed to work.  After sitting for a few days, the car started right up.  After driving it a great deal 2 weekends ago, the problem occurred about 1/3 of the time but eventually I could get it to start.  Last week I could not get it to start OR turn over at all.  The battery is OK, but NOTHING happens as I try to start it???

Thanks,

Jason

I had very similar symptoms--the problem seemed to be humidity
sensitive. Turned out to be corroded terminals on the electrical
connector to the idle speed motor. Cleaning them up with a little file
and electrical contact cleaner did the trick.  In general, it is a good
idea to check all those colorful little plugs from time to time.

You really need to determine the system causing the problem. It could
be either fuel or ignition. The next time it won't start see if you
are getting spark. This will send you into the right trubleshooting
path. No spark and it's electrical, spark  means fuel system trouble.
I am going to guess that since it eventually starts without changing
anything that it is ignition related. How old are the ignition wires
and were the plugs ever cleaned and gapped? The accumulater "fix" is
only meant to diagnose a hard hot start so I wouldn't have expected it
to mean anything. Does it seem worse when the humidity is high? This
would point to ignition breakdown. If it starts easily after it is
warmed up this also indicates ignition breakdown. Of course fuel
system problems could also mimic these symptoms. When was the car last
tuned up. 9 times out of 10 these symptoms finally lead an owner to do
the tune-up he was putting off and replacing the usual parts "fixes"
the problems. Wintertime is a great time to do the maintaince you put
off during the driving season.

This is a "shot in the dark", but you may want to look at the
electrical connections at the top of your fuel pump.  This sounds
exactly like what was happening to my car last year, and the
connectors were found corroded, with intermittent contact.  I had to
replace the pump, and the rubber boot that covers the pump.  This is a
common area for corrosion because of the water that is dumped onto it
from the windshield cowl area, and the configuration of the cover
(two holes molded in for line penetrations).

Hi all, My name is Danny. Im new to all the fun and exciting things
the DMC news list offers.  I browsed the list a few years back but it
seemed pointless to just continuously get my hopes up of ever owning
a delorean. Well the time has come where I am God willing within one
year of purchasing a DeLorean. I live in Long Island, NY and I am
about 30min from PJ Grady. Are there any DeLorean Owners in the New
York/long island/Oyster bay area on this list? If so, give a yell. Id
love to talk with ya. Also, I went to look at a DeLorean for sale at
a classic car dealer about 20 min from me. Its an 83' 7,341miles.
Mechanically it looked ok, but then again I cant tell much by getting
a quick look at the engine(It was pretty cramped)Aside from the shot
heatliner and door struts, the interior was impecable. It seemed a
little high at 20k. many little things(windows A/C, fuel line and
like I said headliners, struts and some electrical need replacing).
So it seems the search continues. I am contimplating if I should stop
by PJ grady and see if they deal in DeLorean Sales? Does anyone have
info on this. Thanks all and hope to talk to ya soon.

What you should do is use up the gas to have 1/2 a tank or less and
put some extender in it. Also, change the oil and filter. This is the
minimum. You can also, flush the brake and clutch lines with new
fluid and lastly you can put the car up on jackstands. It is a good
idea to put a heavy plastic sheet under the car to keep condensation
from forming on the underside that can come up from the ground/
cement under the car. There are many other things that others will
suggest as well, such as wash the car, cover the car, and put some
dry packs in the passenger compartment. I am sure that there are
somethings that I have forgotten.
Good luck,
Gary Masie

i herd a *pop* and the car lost ALL electricity! after cussing and a tow,
the next day, i reconnected the battery to troubleshoot and after about 6
min, all the lights came on. for sh*ts and giggles, i tried to start her
*VROOM*! What in Gods name happened. and more importantly, can i
replace/upgrade something so it wont happen again?

Oh and one more thing, i know my AC needs charging, but will thet cure the
DEEP surge i have when driving or is there another fix, like the fan fix,
but for ac compressors?

[Moderator Note: Okay, one last post for closure, because I SERIOUSLY doubt that any business will respond to a message like this on a public forum.  Henceforth no idle speculation on legal matters or hearsay about subscribers will go out on my watch.  That means if Subscriber X posts a message, Subscriber Y cannot respond: "Sure, X says nice things on the list, but when I spoke to him in private he told me he steals from children and worships the Devil."  If they didn't say it on the DML, they didn't say it at all.  Kapiche?   - Mike Substelny]

To Mike Substelny Moderator:

I agree with this last post and your closing the topic, I am encouraging all remaining edition owners to contact DMC Houston and complane, demand refunds, etc.

I request that you allow or post to the list that the list will allow one last post from me out lining what the out-come is, when it occures. By this I mean if I receive a license from DMC Houston or If I do not. It seams to me only fair to both DMC Houston and my self that list members know what DMC houston finally decides to do.

I would suggest to the list that the copyright question regarding a DeLorean supplier is very much to to point of this list, what any supplier is doing is of great importance to all DeLorean owners. I also feel that when the moderators decide to close a thread, that it is important to bear in mind un decided issues that may effect list members. Remember that the Limited edition was basically for List members only, so

posting the out come of the copyright issue is important.

May I suggest that a moderator post something to the effect that a licensing out come will be allowed.

If and when DMC supplies the license as they have promised :

I can send any such posting to you for approval or what ever method you wish. I invision something along these lines:

DMC has/has not - provided an acceptable use license, I can/am now completing the and shipping  the remaining Limited editions. If you are still waiting for your edition plaeas contact Ken Montgomery with your desired shipping address information.  - Than You - Lee Seiler

First point: Moderator, please kill the logo rights thread. None of these characters are
lawyers and absolutely nothing good can come of this discussion.

[Subject line added and futher logo discussion snipped by moderator.]

Next point: I haven't found this in the book anywhere and its been so damn long
since my car has actually run....... Is the digital clock on the console next to
the shifter supposed to stay on even when the car is off? If not, I have
absolutely no idea what the heck I did to that car now. I swear on my life, the
more things I fix on that monster the more things break. She's fighting me to
stay in the garage.
Last Point: If Dave Stragand doesn't post an update soon to the Vixen, I'm going
to find his house when I'm home for Christmas and literally beat him out into
his garage or to his computer. Love that website, Dave.
