Subject: My hotbar image. (dmc collage)

 Hi everyone, i just wanted to let you all know that i have made a
collage image of Deloreans for everyone to enjoy and use in Hotbar.
For those of you who do not know, Hotbar is an application that
replaces your Internet Explorer toolbar's grey background with an
image of your choosing. their site is located at

The Images are taken from the following wonderful dmc owners:

Frank, from the Danbury CT. area (I forgot your last name!), who
invited me down back in July for the get-together along with 2 other
owners at the local cruise night. I had a heck of a time, Thanks for
the cokes! I snapped the pic for the D in the upper right corner
(nose clip).

Dave,(never caught your last name.) Whom, as it turns out works for
the same company that i do. (Sikorsky Aircraft) I snapped the pic of
his D with the doors open in the left of the image.

Steve, also in attendance that evening, had a very good example of a
D, it kept getting all the glances! JZD's autograph is courtesy of
the pic i took of his glove compartment lid.

Mark Shields, whose BTTF replica appears in the lower right.

Unknown person, who uploaded the image of the dealership sign, seen
on the left, into the Delorean files directory.

And the gentleman from Hopkinton, MA. who sent me pictures of the
centerpiece of this image. He was selling it at the time, i wish i
could have bought!

I am looking to make some more collages, and would love to have
pictures of D list member's vehicles. Needed are High quality images
preferably of size 1028x768 or 800x600.

I have two problems; 1- speedometer just stopped working, the needle just
doesn't work. 2- Manual transmission is hard to get into gear when it gets
hot. When cold it shifts just fine.

Can anyone shed any light on my problem.

This procedure is not recomended but it works. Take the spare tire to
a tire shop that will be comfortable in demounting and remounting the
spare. Ask if they have Camel Bead Sealer or equivelent. Have them
apply liberaly to the bead of the tire and rim. The problem with the
spare is that it does not seal well at the bead of the rim and by
using the Bead Sealer it will now hold air. It should be checked at
least monthly but my spare holds 60 psi and now doesn't leak. Before
doing this it wouldn't hold air for 1 day! If they are a little sloppy
with the sealer just clean it up when you get home. Keep a large
plastic bag and a bungee cord with the spare just in case you ever
have to use it! The flat tire can be placed either on the passenger
seat or on top of the engine cover with the bungee cord holding the
sunshade (in the plastic bag). If you inspect your tires weekly
including air pressure and replace when the tread indicators show your
chances of needing the spare are low.

When I was in the wharehouse in Colombus in 1998 Leif Montin, the
former parts manager, was working for DMC at the time and showed me a
cardfile that he said contained vin #s, dealer lists and frame #s. He
said it wasn't complete but there was a lot of info that someday would
(time permitting) be made available. For further info contact James
Espey as he might know what became of it.

Just a quick intro. 
I don't know how I haven't found you until now but I'm glad I did.  I
have owned my 1981 Delorean(vin#2602)since new and love to talk about
problems and solutions with everyone.  My DMC has been stored most of
it's life and now I have decided it's time to bring it out much more
often.  Reading past postings has been enlightening as to just how
many people still love this car.  I live in the St. Louis area and
own my own sign business.  Having owned my car since new, I bring
some experiences that may be helpful.  Thanks for welcoming me into
your group.  I hope to gain and contribute any knowledge I can.

2.  You need to upgrade your plastic clutch line to a steel braided.

  Stay away from Progressive!!! When I got my D in January, they
wanted 468 every 6 months for full coverage....until that 6 months
was over, then they wanted almost 700 DOLLARS! And this is for me, a
24 year old with no accidents and no tickets. Right now I am with
Geico for just under 400 every 6, but I'm still shopping around.

Travis, The cadallic alternator is only 100 amp vs  Delorean 150 at 150 amps.Plenty of power when you need it. The cadallic is also about 1 1/2 times the size of the GM Delco we build. Big bulky looking thing. I also have a friend in Tyler tx. that has put two of them on his car. He said the next one was coming from me.

Has anyone changed out the Steering Column Universal Joint?

It looks as if mine is bad since steering is almost impossible.  I had the
car towed on a dolly and it seems to have affected the steering.

It looks easy in the book, however, I have said that in the past and a week
later I am still on the project...

If anyone has done it, please let me know what to watch out for.

1. In addition to checking the angle drive, you might check the lower
speedo cable. I have had several lower speedo cables croak on me and
the diagnosis is quite simple (the cable is also a lot cheaper than
the angle drive).

Incidentally, my lower speedo failure problem appears to be due to
lubricating the angle drive too much (my shop gives my angle drive a
shot with each oil change). As a result of grease being pushed into
the angle drive, the excess appears to push up the lower speedo cable
causing it to foul.

I uspect that if I simply have them disconnect the speedo cable
before lubing the angle drive the problem will be solved as the
excess grease won't foul the lower speedo cable. Maybe a lighter lube
would be beneficial as well.

I don't have an explanation, but I do have an extra Delorean if you want to
replace it.  It is vin # about 4800 (I can't remember those things.)  I want
to sell it to raise some capital for my business.  The clutch does slip so I
am selling it for $14,500.  It has 11,000 actual miles...no body damage.

I offer my condolences. I'm so sorry that happened.

Can you tell us more about the situation? How long had it been between
the time you drove it and the time it started on fire? What were the
last couple of things done to it (maintenance-wise)? Did it behave oddly
ever? (electrical weirdness? engine hesitation?) Did you notice anything
unusual? Is anything in the wiring not stock?

I have only had my D for a week or so, but know a fair amount about
cars. I'll help hypothesize any way I can.

With any vehicle there can be speculation and possible causes as to
why it may have caught fire. Before anyone would truly be able to
guess (on the list or otherwise) they/we would need a bit more
information as to what happened. Since you were not with the car,
where was it? Mechanic shop, garage, storage, parking lot, etc...
Then there would be questions about retracing the cars steps up
untill the disaster. Mechanical work performed, any unusual damage to
the vehicle that may have occured, etc... The surounding area where
it was at the time will be of concern too. Where was it, what was it
doing there, and what if any other property was damaged. How was the
fire discovered, and what stopped it?

I'm sure that you have the sympathies of everyone here on the list,
and we all want to help you out. But we will need a bit more info.
Speculation is easy, a hypothesis takes work...

Derrick,

my sincerest condolences to you on your loss.  you are right - this is definitely the saddest letter i have ever read on email in my life.... just be thankful your car didn't catch fire with you or someone else in it....

in order to determine what could have caused the fire (which would be endless speculation w/o seeing the car anyway), we'd have to know if the car was running or not, where it was at, how long it had been running, what updates have you done to your electrical compartment, any symptoms or behaviors in the recent past, it would be best to know what part the fire started in (front, passenger compartment, engine area).  there are many ways to start a fire and i don't think anyone on this list can tell you for sure. we can only speculate.

i would assume that you had some bad wiring in your electrical compartment.  for instance, my fan-fail jumper had a poor connection in it causing the wiring to blow both fuses and begin to melt the fuse holders.  if i had the windows all the way down and i had a strong air freshener, i might not have known i had a problem until it actually ignited.  i was able to catch it while it was hot and smelling icky.

again - i'm really sorry to hear about your car. i would be devastated if my car burned to the ground too.  feel free to email me any time!

Concerning your hard shifting, you should first try to lubricate (white
grease) your shifter. You have to dismount the front panel (the panel
surrounding the shifter) and apply grease on the front shift linkages
(directly under the shifter).

I do that twice a year and every time shifting is again an easy task.
Without grease, it becomes hell.

Folks, I need help (or at least someone to tell me I'm not totally
insane!)

I'm following the instructions of the seasoned D owners here o this
group. Trying to troubleshoot some problems, I was checking all of
the vacuum lines - following the chart in the engine compartment and
the pictures in the tech. manual.

I found out that the vacuum lines do not all go where they are
supposed to. I'm trying to find the Thermal Control Valve (which
should be just to the right of the air intake plate assembly)...

I can't find it. Moreover - the hoses that should lead to it, do not.
(this is why I went searching for it; I believe I have a spark
advance problem).

Am I looking in the wrong place? Is it not exactly where the picture
specifies? Is it possible that it could have been removed - (and then
would the engine even run at all ??? which it does.)

I know how this sounds, I'm really not that dense...but I just don't
see it.  Any guidance or experience would be appreciated.

  I also have State Farm insurance and I wish I paid what you guys are
paying for your "full" insurance coverage.
I am posting this itemized list of what my insurance covers. And I would
also like to please ask everyone who has there DeLorean's insured with State
farm as well to please post or send me privately a copy of there itemized
statement.

Subject: Insurance Threads

This comes up a lot on the list and is obviously a popular topic, but
please remember that comparing car insurance costs without knowing
your location, age, driving record, and term of insurance (6 months,
1 year, etc) is like comparing apples and watermelons.

I guarantee that the same company insuring the a 16-year-old in New
York will charge considerably (5x) more than for a 45-year-old in
Iowa. Give one of them a bad record or a DWI or two and it gets even
worse.

Dear Group,
  I would like to thank EVERYONE who responded back to me about helping me find cheaper insurance.  My mailbox was flooded with replies.  I dropped my progressing Progressive insurance and found a State Farm agent who quoted me $514 every six months.  Of course, that will drop when I get married and take out a homeowners policy, so I can't complain!

Again, thanks to everyone who took the time to email me or the list with the insurance advice.  It is MUCH appreciated.

Looks like YahooGroups finally got around to adding the photo album
function to the DML YahooGroup. You can access this at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dmcnews and follow the "Photos" link.
This has more storage space than the files section and has a nicer
preview function.

Please - for the benefit of the rest of us, use your photo editing
software to reduce the photo size to something manageable - 30-50k is
about right.

I just did this 2 weeks ago.  Works great.

I bought the alternator at NAPA ($150) because they have the
superior Beck-Arnley remans instead of the cheapie Schucks ones.   
It was $50 more but I'd rather not run into trouble for relatively
little money. They took my Motorola as a core with no questions.

To get it to work you have to get that J bracket.  The only place I
found one was at a larger Schucks store.  I had to modify it
slightly by drilling another hole lower down and sawing off the
extra length.  I also got the wiring harness adapter (also required)
from Schucks too. Email me privately for part numbers.

Note I did not need to do the pivot alternator bracket modification
listed here.

100A works just fine in my car.  My volt readings are roughly as
follows:

850 RPM, 13v - all accessories off
850 RPM, 11.5v - headlights, cooling fans, blower on high, rear
defrost on (I have no a/c)
1000+ RPM, 13.5v+ - no matter what is running

Checking voltage under load is key.

Please note that these readings are me just looking at the gauge.  I
was worried that this cheaper alternator (compared to the other ones
mentioned on the DML or a BOSCH volvo replacement) was inferior
because of the low output at low rpms.  However, another PNDC club
member and I were comparing volt gauge readings since he has a BOSCH
105A reman alternator ($250+ unit)and we get about the same
readings.  The only nice thing about his is you can use the stock
bracket and it's smaller in overall size.  Be forewarned, the
Cadillac one is HUGE, but does fit.

Note as part of this I cleaned the major rear grounds but have not
cleaned the major front grounds.  That made a huge, huge difference
(I checked the gauge readings before and after).  The next chance I
get I will clean the front ones and possibly do the mod to add an
additional heavy duty ground wire from the front grounds to the rear
negative terminal / ground to really ensure good front ground.  The
volt gauge really dips on the headlights and fans which suggests to
me that the ground up there is not as good in my car right now. 
I've read about this in several other posts here.
