Since we have a Parts Manual to catalogue parts, and a Workshop
Manual to detail repairs, how about calling it the DeLorean Startup
Manual since it's goal will be to return cars to the road?

With all due respect to Darryl T & Mike G,

Mike G's method of removing the radio is really slick, but it's not for me.
My opinion, especially for newbies, is to take the console cover off and
move the radio bracket forward to work on the radio and the a/c controls.
This is for several reasons:

1) The center air vents are rather fragile.  Without reaching behind the
dash to release the clips, I would be worried about breaking the plastic.
In order to get a hand in there, you are going to need to remove the console
cover.

2) The vinyl boots on the center air vents collapse too easily.  There was
no way I could get mine back together properly without access from the top.
I think some D's are missing these boots because some mechanics didn't have
the patience to fit them back without removing the console.

3) I admit that I have very large hands, and my hands were too big to reach
behind the console to access the mode switch.  I had to move the bracket
forward to have enough room to work.

On a similar subject, I have read posts about how many people like to remove
a seat to work under the dash.  To me, this would be a total waste of time.
I have no trouble slithering under there with the seats in place while other
people wouldn't even consider it.  Yet on the other hand, I wouldn't think
of working behind the radio bracket without first removing the console cover
and at least loosening the radio bracket.

Probably the best advice is to disturb as little as you can get away with.
And I'm sure that it helps to have small hands.

Subject: A letter of thanks and a little more

Let me start by thanking Dave S. and the other
moderators of this group (not sure who you are), for
making it available.

Secondly, I'd like to thank each and every one of you
on here.. i've never seen so much support for anything
in my life as I get on here for the DeLorean.... if we
all lost our jobs, we could open up a customer service
consulting business, because i have seen no other
place in the world, cars, computers, or otherwise that
take the time and care, and understanding the folks on
this mailing list do to help others out...

Remember a few weeks ago i had posted the message
aboutgas leaking out of my car... got tons of
replies... i am NO mechanic trust me... i cant change
a tire... well, i ordered the tankzilla from pj grady
(who spent about 45 min of his busy schedule on the
phone with me, even though 40 phones were ringing in
the background)... he told me to order a few things,
but the wife vetoed the spending and i just got the
tankzilla...

Scared as hell, i removed the tire, tire case, and
waaalaa, there it was... the old sending unit... i was
thinking "no way can it be this easy!"... since i had
everything up, i felt all the hoses and they all seem
to be ok.. they are not gushy.. although they are
hard, and they dont leak.. well, i put the silicone on
the zilla-brain, popped in the new floaty thing, and
hooked her up.....

I warned my family to get a couple hundred feet from
the garage cuz I was gonna crank it... and there it
was, the moment of truth... for the first time in 15
years the fuel gauge moved!!! it was no longer
pointing straight up, it was showing just under a full
tank!!!! I almost cried for joy!!!

Ok there is where the hapiness ends...

The car runs great..... however, next to the sending
unit is a thing that had a rubber/plastic seal on it
which was no longer sealing anything, with two hoses
coming out of it  (its pictured in the tankzilla
instructions).. it had some liquid in it above the
electrical contacts under the boot, so i decided to
see what it was... stuck my hand in it.. and it seems
to be water, as it didnt stink like gas.... what is
this thing, and should i replace it???

PJ Grady's talked about a fuel kit... would this
resolve this thing's problem with the boot and such?

Secondly.... after starting the car and backing it out
for a nice 200 mile drive (now that i can see how much
gas i have), i happened to glance over at my battery
meter.. it was almost to 0.... like the alternator
wasnt working..... it was fine before... i am
wondering if maybe i screwed something up putting the
tankzilla in????  When the needle goes down to the
bottom like that, does it mean the battery, or, worse,
i need to get an alternator????  I am going to
disconnect the tanzilla tommorow and see if that
helps.. if it does maybe its grounding somewhere, if
not... i guess i'll buy the battery and if that doesnt
work, head for the alternator...

Now my big worry... as i said, car started, running
great... no probs... my wife said "oh my God! there is
smoke coming out of the front of the car!!!"

I didn't see any, but she wouldnt lie.. then she
complained of a stink.. that I did smell... it was a
metal rubbing metal type of stink....

I had antifreeze leaking out of the front of the car
badly three weeks ago.. i am thinking maybe it was
empty and the front of the car was getting hot because
there was no fluid or something???

Any ideas???  I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of myself
getting the tankzilla in all by myself.... but these
two other problems (battery), and the stinky smell of
metal rubbing, scare me.... the oil gauge when i hit
the gas goes all the way to the top.. strong pressure,
but when it idles its jumpy, and kinda on the low
side.... i am wondering if maybe something is wrong
there too....

car has 4K miles on it... and the tank was drained
when it was stored so it looks like my fuel system
will be in fairly good shape other than that boot
thingy.... cooling system, battery, and smoke stink
are probs now... any ideas appreciated! thanks again
for all of your help!

Mike

[ Moderators note: I just inherited the list for the week. From time to time we've seen people express their experiances both good and bad with various vendors. I belive we've seen enough on this subject so I'm ending this with the exception of allowing the Jag Shop an opportunity to offer it's side of this subject if they elect to do so.

Bruce Benson, this week's moderator ]

Regretfully so, I saw what was left of Tom's fuel system with my own eyes.
What apparently happened was theft.  I am shocked that the Jag Shop would do
such a thing or at least not be responsible for a vehicle that was left in
their care.  Maybe they had nothing to do with it.  Maybe it happened while
the car was in the care of a sub-contractor.  At first I thought that it
must have been a mistake.  Maybe in a dire need for new parts, they decided
to borrow some parts from another car and just so happened to get the parts
from the wrong donor car.  But then concerning the Jag Shop's attitude --
regardless of whether they are right or wrong in this situation -- I'm
certainly not dealing with them in the future if not only because of their
attitude toward Tom.

And in his e-mail, Tom gave those guys more credit for the fiberglass repair
than they deserve.  Tom had to re-do some of it himself to make it right.

Subject: Calipers are in!

Hey List,

I know its been a while since my last update, but I have been perty
busy with work, and every time I have off from work it rains.  Today (Sunday)
I was finally able to install all 4 of my calipers that were painted by
fellow De Lorean restorer Steve Rubano (thanks again Steve!) and now that
they are in, I have to finish off my steering connection, then I get to
install the brake master, and then I can bleed the brake and clutch systems.
Hopefully if it doesn't rain on Tuesday or Wednesday...I will try and install
my interior parts also.  There is not that much stuff left that I need to do.
I just have the front fascia fitted on the front end, and I need to bolt
that down, then I need to secure the rear fascia onto the car, then get that
darn O2 sensor out, so I can get the new one in and to adjust the CO screw
then just securing the engine compartment cover and the rear louvre, then I
get to test drive it...finally!  Thats all for now.  As always...any
questions please feel free to e-mail me.

Later,
Nick

Subject: the ULTIMATE compliment on my D

Last year I moved from Chicago out here to Silicon Valley. The other day
on my way to work in the morning, I decided to take a different route for
no known reason. I was on highway 280, just east of 85. A new yellow
mustang convertible came up behind me real fast. The car swung to my left
and kept pace next to me. I looked over, expecting to see look that we all
know - which I of course saw. It wasn't until a second later that I
realized that the passenger of the car was none other than Steve Jobs, the
founder of Apple Computers. We were on the highway right in front of
Apple's corporate headquarters.

I'm a young guy in the dot-com world, so naturally I've looked up to Steve
Jobs my whole life for being the pirate that he is. It was one of the
greatest compliments of my life to sit in my DeLorean, looking at Steve
Jobs, seeing the envy burning in his eyes!

I couldn't help but notice the similarity of the new Mac Titanium G4
notebook computer and the DeLorean. Have a look at Apple's latest
marketing:

(look closely)

Good night,

Hi List,
I tried to upload some pics of a Lancia Monte Carlo to the files
section to show how similar the styling is on this car to a DeLorean -
it's the closest I have ever seen! Anyway, it seems the moderators
might have turned off our ability to load up images to the files
section ??? so here's a link to a page with plenty pics for anyone
who is interested. Notice it even has darker colored front facias!
The best pics are towards the bottom of the page...
http://homepages.enterprise.net/montemike/monte/gallery.html
It was styled by Pininfarina, and launched around 1975. Do you think
Giugario was a bit influenced by the design?
John.

Favored name thus far, thanks for all of the suggestions, both on the
list and off.   My favorite from yesterday seemed too pretentious after
reading other suggestions.

Ready for content.

What I'm looking for is problems you encountered when you first got your
D and how you solved those problems (step by step including mistakes),
if possible.

Separately, any problems from cars that had been stored a long time,
what were the main problems encountered.

First hand or second hand, anything you're aware of at startup and early
on.

If it's a complicated procedure run it through the list for alternate
suggestions, if it's simply your version of how it should be done or you
don't want to put it through the list, send it to me directly.

Need a quick flurry of input and we'll get it launched.

Thanks, Les

Subject: Re: lancia + uploading files...

As I've owned both a DMC-12 (1982 model, owned since new) and a Lancia
Montecarlo ... all one word (or more accurately in my case the U.S. version,
the Scorpion; bought new in 1977 and later sold to a friend who still has it)
I feel I can comment on the similarities and differences between the two.
Yes, both had the same general shape, but there were lots of differences.
The D is stainless; the Lancia conventional steel-and-paint; the D has
gullwings; the Lancia had a very wide folding ragtop (more like a canvas
moonroof), but the windows and door frame remained in place; the D has a
reasonably sized engine, the Lancia had a rejected Fiat 4-cylinder motor; and
... perhaps the biggest difference:  the Delorean refuses to rust, while the
Lancia rapidly turned to reddish powder.  (Although it may be that MY Lancia
was built on a Friday in Turin!)

Still, the "flavor" of the two is similar ... feeling close to the road,
feeling the road in the seat of your pants, and enjoying the stares of people
who have never seen one of whichever vehicle is in question.

Both are thoroughly enjoyable to drive ... it's a shame that Fiat ruined a
company that had produced a proud string of championship cars (including the
Stratos with a Ferrari Dino V-6 engine, of which only a handful -- 4, I
believe, one of which I've seen and driven -- ever made it to the U.S.).  And
it's a shame that the DeLorean fell on evil times.  But such is the lot of
those of us who like cars that resemble the Lancia Scorpion and the DeLorean.
Perhaps someday we'll have a new automobile to drool over!

By the way, those front fascias were alike ... both in plastic that tended to
ripple and discolor with age.

Glad to provide some additional details.

Also - the "files" area (often referred to by its old name "the vault") is
getting kind of full, so I've started deleting the oldest material. If you
have something there that should be posted forever, let me know and I'll
move it to the main www.dmcnews.com web page. I'd also appreciate it if you
reduce the quality of your posted images so they aren't so big. 30kb for a

This is going to require group input, likely a step at a time.  Mine is don't
replace the battery and then the alternator, charge the battery first and see
if the alternator is working, if not then consider another alternator.
Charge the battery fully, see if it holds a charge for a couple of days.  If
not, most batteries are dated by month and year, see how old yours is,  if
it's around 3 years or so might just get a new one for that reason.  If you
don't need it now you'll need it soon.  If the battery seems like it should
have some virtue but is not holding well for a couple of days, disconnect the
closest battery cable and leave it off for a couple of days then see if it
acts like it should when you replace the cable.  If it does, you have drain
while the battery is off and that's another story, come back to the list for
the answer to that one.

Yes; please!! I am currently a non-owner, but am going to purchase my very
own Delorean sometime this year. Something like this would help me
immensely! Good things to include:

- All sorts of info on bringing a car out of storage (most D's I've come
across have been stored and I have no idea what I'd need to do in order to
make it a reliable daily driver).
- List of typical problems, procedure to identify & fix them and approximate
cost & time for each.

Also, a detailed "what to look for when purchasing" section would be very
helpful. When I buy a car, I like to look under the hood and check
everything out. With a Delorean, I really don't know what I'd be looking
for!

As for names: I like "So you bought a Delorean, now what?"

Unfortunately, I can't help with content, but if you need someone to
organize the project & compile the information I'd be happy to volunteer. We
can start now by throwing out ideas on topics, and once we have enough
topics, present them to the list. Then, the folks who are most knowledgable
here can pick a topic and fill out a template with details about how to
identify the problem, fix it, costs, etc. If a central web site to host and
maintain this FAQ is not available, I'd be happy to provide one.

I'm lobbying for helping the next guys, a section called "Start up
facts" or "First facts" or something along those lines.  FAQ doesn't get
it, that only told me what grade of gasoline to use.

John's radio diagram is great BUT I have more problems:
What do you do when the radio wiring isn't there... the wires going to the
car connector which in turn connects to the Craig connector.

My question, where are the wires suppose to come from, from behind the
center console? I need to hook up new wires. I have the speaker wires and
antenna, but am missing the original +12V wire together with the +12V
ignition wire... I think they are supposed to be red and orange
respectively. Please help!

Subject: Fuel Pump Check Valve.

Pardon My ignorance when it comes to fuel systems, but is it
possible to service just the check valve on the fuel pump? Or replace
the fuel pump altogether. My car is hard to hot start, yet I have a
new accumulator in it, so I think it is losing fuel pressure out of
the check valve. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Subject: Re: Fuel Pump Check Valve.

There was a change in fuel pump design JUST for this reason.  All 1981
cars came with a fuel pump with at built in check valve.  To my
knoledge this is not serviceable.  However, as of the '82 models and
later, a newer fuel pump was used which had an external check valve.
Many of the 81s now have the newer style put in them, but ones still
with an original pump most likely will not.  If your pump is the newer
style, (which can be determined by a "dome" nut on top of the banjo
fitting for the fuel line, as apposed to a flat one) you should be
able to get a new from from a DeLorean or bosch supplier.  (Dont know
for sure though, since they come with the fuel pump, and I haven't
seen them listed separately.  I can't imagine they wouldn't be
availible though.)  If you have the old style pump, you probably
should just get a new from from a DeLorean supplier, and check the
condition of the inside of your tank while your at it.  Good Luck.

Hey everybody,

I may soon be getting a DeLorean! HOPEFULLY. I need some help.  First
does anybody know of a car CD player that plays burned CD's (CD R's and
RW's).  Next I would jus like to have some tips on like cosmetics for the
outside of the car.  Some things like the DMC hubcaps from DMC in Houston or
others.

I would really appreciate help with the CD player question.

THANKS \

Ali

Subject: HELP!!!!!!!!!

I called rob grady on this one earlier tonight, but I was a little
overwhelmed (and cold) so I don't think I gave him the best info (sorry Rob!
I will call you again tomorrow)  In the mean time...if anyone else can
help...or offer ideas...

I was driving home (1 hour commute) and the last 5 minutes, I noticed that
if I took a sharp (or somewhat sharp) right turn, I could hear a rubbing
sound (like a fan blade scraping something, or the a tire rubbing on the
body)  It came from the front right side of the car (my first thought was
the tire) but I just drove again, and had the same thing, but noticed I had
the heater on with the blower set to "1".  If I turned it off while turning
or set it higher, the rubbing sound went away.  Is the blower fan for the
heat located in the front right side of the car?  Is this what I am hearing?
When I shut it off, it slowly went away, when I cranked it to "2" or "3" it
went away and I could hear the fan with its normal sound.

More importantly.....The car also started to spew coolant when I first got
home.  The temp gauge never went into the red (or over 220) from what I
know.  (I panicked and turned the car off and manually rolled it out of my
garage to avoid a mess)  Over all I lost about 10oz of coolant.  I called
Rob Grady, and he told me that I have to bleed the system.  I am not at all
mechanically inclined, so he told me to have someone help me.  Now that I
drove it again, I checked the coolant expansion tank (when cold) and it was
3/4 filled.  Do I need to add coolant?  Do I need to still bleed it?  I ran
it for 20 minutes and the temp stayed fine (not sure if the fans came on or
not).

I was panicking at first thinking a hose burst, or something worse, but I
did finally realized that the coolant came from the hole on the top where
the cap is.  (again...sorry Rob!  I did not know that hose was SUPPOSED to
do that.  And I did not realized that was where the coolant came from)

Please  respond tonight if you can...so I get a little piece of mind before
I go to bed.  I have had the car blues...new DMC cost me mega bucks, then
the head gasket blew on my Intrepid!  I am going SOOOO broke!  :)

A sure way of testing the alternator is to start the car then remove one of the battery leads (preferbally the positive), then test the pos and neg for 12-17vDC. This will tell you if the alternator is producing electricity. I had to change my alternator and all was ok partly due to the old motorolla only producing 68vDC and the old rusted nuts causing resistance shorting out the charge. If you need to change the alternator, I have a list of part numbers that will get you a straight replacement from your local parts store, OR if you are like me, more power is always the way to go. I will have a new web page up in about 2-3 days @ www.sk1pper.com that has pic of mine and how i put a 140a alternator on.

Let me know if you need any more info or if this even helps ...

most car radios will play CD-R discs.  CD-RW is a different story.  I do not
know of any that do that.
